I need to find out part #'s, for a Johnson Model# HD25, Serial# 514636 that I recently acquired. I need #'s for the following.
Recoil Spring-
Capacitors-
Coils-
I have checked with several of the suppliers that I have repetedly seen after pouring over the posts in these forums but it has been several days with no reply from them. I am pretty sure that the only essential part standing between me and a happy duck season is the coil. I appreciate any help.
Thanks,
Jason

Recoil spring 41,197 Condencers 71.300,522 coil 72,375,189 (assembly). Jason, these are original OMC part#s from the HD25 parts catolog. The recoil spring should be no big deal. I believe the newer model motors use the same spring, just a different part#. If they are not the same you can probably make it work. The coils and condencers may be another story.

Alcan,
Thanks for the info. Any idea where I might find a copy of that manual? All the manuals that I have found start at 1950 and don't cover the HD models.
Thanks Again,
Jason

I do not have a repair manual for these models. All I have is parts catologs. For repairs I have just used the earliest manuals I could find and went from there. Fortunately the HD,TD and TN series motors are very basic. You miight check your local public libraries reference section. They my have an older copy of a generic outboard repair manual. Since these motors were, and still are, so popular, they are about as generic as you can get. Are you missing a coil? There is a lot that can be done to make repairs.

Re: Need help finding Johnson part #s

I am not missing a coil but I am pretty sure that I have one bad coil. I cleaned and reset gaps on the points, also new plugs with correct gaps. I get great spark on bottom cylinder plug but no spark on the top cylinder. I switched the capacitors, still great spark on bottom cylinder and nothing on the top. As you mentioned these are pretty generic motors, so I don't know what could be wrong if not the coil. Is there a way to test/ repair the coil specifically?? I can't see any way to get into the darn thing. Thanks for the help.

Some times the spark plug wires break between the coil and the plug. If this is the case you may be able to solder a new wire to the coil. These coils do fail, how ever, I have found darn few. Yes the coils can be tested if you have the proper equipment. I don't. You may be able to find an older OMC dealer, repair center or the same in a small gas engine repair shop. Ask the if they will test the coil for you for a couple of bucks. Try to pick a time when they are not up to thier ears in alligators. When you cleaned the points, did you also clean the little bake-a-lite sticks and thier run ways? This is by far the most common problem with this ignition. The little sticks get stuck. Sometimes not allowing full movement. You will want to be careful working with this ignition stuff. These parts are sort of tough to find NOS and I feel are too costly when when you do. Very easy to toss $200. into a $50. motor. Also be careful with the carb. The good news is, just about every garage in America has one of these motors in it or behind it. So used parts are plentiful. The only problem here is, you can't seem to find one when you need it, sort of like deer. Any way keep monkeying around with this coil, let me know what you find.

I'm not quite sure what part of the points are the bake-a-lite sticks?? Also, the spark plug wires have some of epoxy where the wires attach to the coil. Is this common for theese coils, or is that some creative engineering on someones part?

With out seeing the coils it would be hard to make a call on creative engineering. If I recall, the coils I,ve worked with just had a small gob of solder to where the wire attached. This by no means makes yours incorrect. I would test first before digging epoxy. I would think epoxy would be better any way. The sticks in question run through the point blocks. They rub the cam ground to the crank shaft. The sticks actuate the points. If they become stuck or sticky they may not allow the points to close. Also be sure you have good continuity across the points. Test with a meter or a flashlite batt and lite.
