Sorry search kept coming up with no matches, I Don't know what I was doing wrong.

I have a 1986 Johnson 90 hp, model J90TLCDC.

VRO pump is leaking between the main gas chamber seams. The gasket looks good, but the plastic doesn't even come close to touching when I tighten down all the screws. I tried a gasket maker to fill the gap, but no luck. Diaphragm looked good and everything inside looked sound.

I would like to take this time to go to a standard fuel pump and premix my own gas. I have done it with jet skis so not a problem.

Anyone have a part number or pump that would work with this. I found the Sierra #18-7352 here in town, but it says for 1976-1989 25-55hp. Would my 90hp still get enough gas?

That pump will work fine. It is the same pump used on the 88 HP "Special" no frills motors, which are basically the same as the 90 HP ones.

Awesome Rick, thanks for the quick help.

As I have read the hole in the back just has an oring or gasket that is sandwiched between the manifold and pump itself and then screwed onto the manifold? Or is there a way to use the pulse line from the old VRO?

If you don't have a spot to mount it, you will need a different pump that has the pulse fitting on it that goes to the pulse fitting on the motor. I believe it is 438559 (which may be superseeded by a newer number) that has a fuel line inlet, a fuel outlet and a fitting for the pulse line from the motor. You will have to Jury rig a mount for the pump. Looks like this:

Re: Need help finding a standard fuel pump.

Rick I am almost there. I got the Sierra 18-7353 and the brass nozzle looked mighty small for one end so I am going to NAPA tomorrow to try to find a 5/16th brass nozzle. Is there anyway you could identify each nozzle on the pump so I hook it up correctly? I know the black on is gas in. Which of the brass nipples are the pulse and gas to carbs?

Your help is appreciated.

Re: Need help finding a standard fuel pump.

THIS IS WHAT I DONE A WHILE BACK>>>MY PUMP BOLTED TO THE MOTOR AND DIDN"T HAVE TO USE THE PULSE LINE...
1989 90 hp...in the first pic is the pump...sierra 18-7352,replaces omc438556 and a plug for the pulse line. Also had to get 2 .10-24--2" bolts.I mounted the fuel pump upside down so the fuel lines had the shortest route to fuel manifold.I gave it a test run in the yard an all seemed good so off too the lake.I let engine run at idle for 5 min's( never skiped a beat). then took it up to 5600 rpms for about 5- 6 min.s, back an forth across the lake 4 times, Big lake, ( never skiped a beat) then put it back in netural an let it idle again for 5 min.s.Boat never died and never had a power loss of any kind......in the first post is pics of the old pump an the problems i was having (replace vro fuel pump).Hope this can help somebody else.........

Johnson is also had that pump and the machine 10 screws were really tight so I didn't want to strip anything. Just went back and got the 3 nozzle one. Hopefully putting it together tonight.

Re: Need help finding a standard fuel pump.

Well not good news. The gas out to carb nozzle is 5/16th with a thread space of 18 and the nozzle is 1/4. The hose to the carbs is 5/16th.

I have been to 4 hardware stores here in town and 2 specific hydraulic stores looking for a 5/16th threaded to a nozzle end of 5/16. Nothing to found and they recommend I just order it online.

Were others that made this bard a larger size just lucky to find it in town? Or should I just try to make the 1/4th nozzle fit the 5/16 fuel line?

Well I tried to make it work and just priming the bulb and the nozzle spewed everywhere. Anyone changed the barb to a larger size before that could tell me where they go it?

Re: Need help finding a standard fuel pump.

I am still without boat another weekend due to not being able to find a correct barb size. I have been to about 7 places here in town and they all look at me like I am crazy. Someone said the threads on the fuel out were SAE threads. I hate to try to order online due to not knowing the exact size of threads and diameter.
