I have a 1997 40 manual operated 4 cylinder outboard. I have disconnected all of the kill switches and can't seem to get a spark out of it. Is there any check I can do with a common volt/ohm meter to checkout the powerpack or to see where the spark is failing. It originally was running fine, then it died and doesn't seem to want to start again. After about 30 minutes of pulling on the rope it started briefly then died and will not start again. Can anyone mail me a wiring diagram of the harness for this unit?

OK first: hook back up the kill switches, that obviously isn't the problem. They're there to shut down the engine for a reason. Second: You might want to include a mod # to get a response. Off hand ... (and taking into account a lot of assumptions here) It sounds like you might have a magnito/ignition problem assuming that you've already checked the plug wires and installed new plugs.

Howdy, LaverWC.

You need a manual. If someone takes the time and trouble to scan and Email you one page it might or might not help. . . one time.

If you intend to work on your own engine , get a manual.

Someone here has said, "He who works on an outboard without a manual has a fool for a mechanic". That's a little strong, but it is true.

Good luck. :)
