Hey All,

84 Renken boat, Aqa125 4cyl volva motor. The timing belt tensioner went bad. Have all the parts and trying to put the new timing belt on the boat however its to tight??? The tensioner has a spring that puts tension on the bearing. They say to put a pin in the spring to keep it from putting to much tension on the belt and when its installed, remove the pin and it will self adjust.

Well I am doing this but the belt still won't go on. Any ideas? PLEASE HELP!!! :)

Make sure you have the belt even on the pulleys. both side should have the same tension, if not you may be off a tooth on one side

All of the marks are lined up. Still no luck getting the belt on. I don't see any way to make it work... :(

Brian, don't give up. I know it is a frustrating job (been there) but it's doable.

I had the same problem and had to use a rubber mallet and SLIGHTLY tap both sprockets/pulleys on and also the timing chain/belt in the place where it meets the tensioner. It was really tight but after a few minutes of GENTLE tapping (two taps on the bigger sprocket, two taps on the smaller one, two taps on the chain by the tensioner) the chain was on.

You might also need to use a screwdriver (flat) to help the chain/belt slip onto the tensioner.

Make sure the tensioner is retracted as far as possible. Or it is the best if you buy a new one (it pays off since you're already replacing almost all of the timing components) and that way you know it's retracted completely.

Good luck and have patience.
Be GENTLE!
Lou
