First of, thank you guys for this forum. It is awesome and I have been using it since I have owned a boat. Helped me with so many things...

So my problem, my 2002 Merc 3.0L Model number 4111021N2 was making a weird grinding noise when I started it. It would start in one or two turns but just a loud noise. I took the starter apart and looked at the teeth and everything looked fine (I just took it apart, not totally out. Couldn't figure out how). I put was putting the starter back in and as I was tightening the nut on the bolt (where the starter meets starter solenoid) and the bolt broke the plastic where the bolt was. My question is twofold:
1. How can I bypass my solenoid so that I can just get electricity to my starter. Can I just attach the starter wire to the starter itself? And is that safe? I want a way to do this so I can boat before I have a chance to get it fully fixed. I know the solenoid works, its just that the bottom bolt is out of the solenoid so the starter can't get power.

2. How do you remove the solenoid? I cannot find the bolts to remove it. Unless the only bolts are what looks like 12 sided 5/32".

I attached a photo of what my setup looks like. I stole it from another post on this board. I did search for this but couldn't exactly find what I was asking.
Thanks for your help.

I don't think what you're wanting to do is very wise, no offense, or safe in a boat. Something about fuel vapors & sparks that just don't end well. Best & safest thing is replace your starter with the appropriate marine starter. No auto starters. It sounds like it's going bad if it was grinding anyways. How did you disassemble the starter without removing it from the boat? Again I don't mean to sound harsh, but electrical shortcuts are a recipe for disaster in a marine application. Good luck. Jim.

Ayuh,.... The solenoid is an intricate part of the starter,....

The starter will not work without it,.....

Pull the starter from the motor, 'n replace it,.....

I too, have never seen anybody take apart a starter like that,.....
Much easier on the bench,....
