I need some help as i am bidding on a prop on ebay, i run an aluminum 14.25 x 21p and it works great except i can turn it 5k rpm when red line is 4600. I want to try a 23p which is what im bidding on (its gonna b a spare) but its only 13" diameter, i want the bigger pitch to bring down my rpms but is 13" to small?

I would try to stick with a 14" diameter prop.

23p 3 blade should lower you 200 rpms

A 4 blade 20P will lower you 200-300rpms also ( I know first hand)

My old prop is the same as your current one.

Re: Need help bidding on a prop

Actually we need more info to give an accurate answer but we will assume a couple of things. First we are assuming you have a IO and if so you have a 4.75" gearcase (at least). If so then you'll want to stay with props made for the larger gearcase. If the prop you're looking at is really 13 or 13.25" diameter then its meant to run on the smaller 4.25" gearcases. It may not fit your gearcase at all depending on what drive you have and what hub is in the prop now.

Well actually the prop is going to get put on hold as i found water in my gear oil and in the trim motor oil. Who knows when the last time the seals were replaced on the drive (alpha one.....gen 2 i believe) so my buddy is going to help me take it apart and replace all those. Hopefully that fixes it!

As for more info for the prop

95 bayliner 2050 ss but has a 355 in it now

Alpha one w 1.5 gear ratio

Not sure on gear case size but the drive says 5.0 lx if that helps any

Current 21p prop runs 52-53 @ 4600 with throttle left

Hole shot is fine so don't wanna sacrafice speed w a 4 blade

21" to 23" equals 300-400 rpm drop. If your motor can turn 5000 now, that will bring you down to about 4600 rpm. You'll pick up speed, but hurt the hole shot.

Cancel your bid. You don't want a 13" diameter prop on your Alpha 1 drive. That's an outboard (below V-6)prop.
