Here you have a 1984 johnson 115 vro, I took it out about a 4 days ago, it started up and ran every time i shut it off, although the idle was fast, so i went by the manual to adjust the idle. I was getting it ready to go out on the lake in the morning and when I hooked up the muffs and tried to start it, it tried to fire but didn't. I then pulled out the plugs one at a time and found that all 4 of them were soaked with fuel, I then dried them off and cleaned them and set the gap to .040 and checked the spark and had good blue snap. then i installed them and tried to run it, it did start and idle at around 850-900 rpms, i used the warm up lever and reved it a few times and it reacted great. i then shut it down and it would not start after that. i pulled the plugs again and once again wet, wet, wet. i also have fuel dripping out of the exhaust. anyone with some help it would be great, i am trying not to goto the dealer. i know that i need new plugs and wires but other than that.. i need help.

Sounds to me like one or more of your engines carbs are flooding as in sticky or leaky needle valves. When you pump up the primer bulb ,before attempting to start the engine , does the bulb get firm and hold or does it remain somewhat soft as if fuel will still pass?If the carb needles are holding ,the bulb should get firm and hold.

I'm thinking you have a stuck primer solenoid. Or maybe the little manual lever isn't fully seated Off. It doesn't take much for the lever to be tripped just enough to pump fuel. Check it and make sure it's snapped into the Off position.

The automatic (electric energizing mode), which is the normal running mode should have the red toggle lever over top of the solenoid, pointing at the other end of the solenoid.

The manual showing that red lever pointing away from the solenoid should also have a paragraph stating that it depicts the manual start (manual choke) mode.

so does that mean i need to have the sol. in the manual position? i am very new at this. so i am actually doubling the fuel if it is in the auto position and i push the key in, and the valve energizes?

You want the lever in the normal 'run' position.Inline with the body of the solenoid. The only reason we are discussing it at all is because we are trying to locate a potential rich condition.Did you ever perform the primer bulb test that I pointed out above? It will tell you if you have leakby.Next step is determining what is leaking by.
