Need help. '96 GSX cavitating, wear ring, or splines?

I have a bone stock '96 GSX with about 190-195 hours on it, that we have owned since new. I have been religous about changing the rear pump oil & seal once a season.

Recently within the last couple of hours, it has developed a symptom where it will not accellerate out of the hole. It will hit the rev limiter until it reaches 3/4 plane and then will "hook" up and accellerate as normal. Then it will run WOT just as normal.

I have looked in the intake and exhaust side of the pump, and do not see anything abnormal or obstructions.

Is this a Wear ring, or how can I tell if my shaft splines are slipping? Are shaft spline slippages common? If so where should I look--impeller, or drive end?

Thanks in advance

WEAR RING. Check gap between impeller and ring. over 1mm and its wear ring time

nearly impossible to just strip the splines unless you had the entire pump apart and screwed up putting it together. and once they are stripped you aren't getting out of the hole at all anymore.

most likely wear ring, could also be a leaky carbon seal. i've seen those leak and behave EXACTLY like you describe, because the pump is sucking in air from the engine compartment when you try to accelerate.

the splines usually strip at the p t o,, however when they do you don't move period,, you probably have a really bad pump liner or bad pump bearings,, pull the pump off and take a look you will find the problem pretty fast

Thanks for all the info. and help. Crater, Where is this carbon seal located? I am not aware of it, and have a manual and will do the research. I just want to know what to look for. The wear ring, I am familiar with but never replaced one.

Assuming it is a wear ring, is it terribly difficult to replace? On a scale of 1-10 on a mechanical level, I would consider myself a 7 or 8 with my trusty manual.

Thanks again.

I just wanted to follow up, because I hate threads with out closure. I removed the whole pump assembly, to discover I had a bent impeller shaft, and the leading edge of the wear ring pretty much destroyed. I ended up replacing all the bearings and seals, new impeller shaft, and a rebuilt impeller. I also added the Idle spring button to the nose cone.

Although, I haven't water tested it yet, I did run it on a hose, and things seemed fine.

I will post later once water tested.
