Chad - you need a good manual like Clymer for $25-35. The starter along with the hot wire and ground wire will get hot if you crank on them hard. It does not sound like a starter problem. You need 1. Fire 2. Fuel 3. Compression to make the motor run.

Start with the simple stuff. Is the motor in neutral - move it in and out a few times. Is the run switch in the run position? Are the gas lines connected. Sometimes it is easy to overlook the simple things.

1.To check the fire you can take out the spark plugs and lay them next to the block. Connect the spark plug wire to the spark plug and you can see the spark when turning the motor over.

2. If you have spark (put the spark plugs back in) you may not be getting fuel. Check the choke - primer bulb - gas tank - fuel filter - and possibly put a little gas in a spray bottle and spray some in the carb while cranking.

3. You will need a compression tester to check compression. You may be able to borrow one at a local parts store. This will get you headed in the right direction hopefully.
