Re: Need glass

Hard to imagine that you cannot find it locally. I think it would not be a shippable item.

Re: Need glass

Go to a glass shop. I have glass table tops made periodically and have no problem finding it locally. ;)

Re: Need glass

What does the laminated have on it.......maybe dumb question but do you think it would effect fish or clarity of the glass?

Ron G. gotta find out if its cost effective first....we really need more tanks and/or bigger tanks but my boss errrr. wife is very tight errrr I mean smart with money so........Im not quite ready to start just researching at this point.

Re: Need glass

The laminated has a film inside between two pieces of glass. This way the glass wont shatter all over the place. Same as your car windshield clear as can be. The old style tempered stuff is tuff, you can hit it with a block and it dont break, but when it does KABOOM like a bomb going off.

tommays, I always heard that tempered can't be cut. Is there a process for cutting it?

Re: Need glass

Might want to look into acrylic. It's suposed to be cheaper, from what I've heard. I might build a large tank in the next few years, but first I have to upgrade my boat and buy a house! What kind of fish do you have?

You don't cut tempered glass, it is cut and then tempered.
;)

Re: Need glass

Shortly is correct, once glass is tempered, it can only be polished on the edges, any attempt at cutting or grinding will destroy it.

Re: Need glass

Mike,
Try american glass in Springfield. They can probably set you up. I have bought glass from them a few times.

Bondo,
You might look if you can see some writing(most of the time "etched" on it somewhere) on the glass saying that it is tempered. If it says that it is dont cut it. If you find no writing and you are feeling brave......
I dont know if there is a way to tell if it isnt marked.
I do know that if you are drilling an aluminum window frame with a 36x72 inch piece of tempered glass in it, trying to get a wire for a burglar alarm contact in the frame, and you catch just the very edge of the glass with a 3/8 drill bit, it will make a pretty spider web design in the window. But, I wont say how I know! :p ;) :D

Re: Need glass

There's no way to tell other than shooting it with a bb gun in one corner that's to be cut off. If it turns into brazillions of small pieces it would be tempered. If it doesn't shatter try to cut. Glass is inexpensive and I would simply buy a new glass top.

Re: Need glass

Mike You have to Check out Reefcentral.com they Have A Few Articles With Great details on how to build big tanks. Also Cichlid-forum.com has a few. But My Sugestion is to go acrylic. Much Lighter, Plus you can get a better bond between the pieces compared to Glass. Also You in a big enough area You Should Try e-bay For Some Already Put Together Tanks
