I have a 1982 60hp 2cyl and a 15hp hanging on a boat rated for a 90hp. I get 35mph out on it. I am thinking about a 85hp 4v johnson 1980-1985. The 85hp will be heavier, how much heavier are we talking about, and will that extra weight and hp increase my speed to a considerable amount?

------------------
Bubba Fred

Re: need for speed

I take it your 60 and 15 are both OMC. If you propose to replace both the 60 and the 15 with the 85 there wont be a significant weight change. The 85 will weigh around 100lb more than the 60 alone.

Ideally propped, the 85 should give you about 5 to 10 mph more in top end than the 60 with a big improvement in hole shot. It will use a bit more than twice as much fuel as the 60.

Though the cross scavenged V4s were as reliable as a panzer, there are better choices among modern engines in the 90hp range.

Good luck.
JB
