Hi all, first post on the forum. I just acquired an 81' Johnson 15HP and I am going to repaint it. Catch is, I already have these stickers:

and need to know what color the lower unit, etc. was- I think it was light blue, but not sure... Also- was the cowl cover pure white as shown in the picture? What year was this color combo for?

Also- is there a resource that shows pictures/colors of the OMC units as a running history? Just curious- I searched online a while last night, and couldn't find anything.

Thanks again- I know I'll be on here trying to get info on my new/old Johnso...er...Evinrude ;)

Welcome to iboats. ;)

I wish I could answer you question, but try eBay and look at some pictures. Outboards are on there all the time and yours should pop up sooner or later. You can look at other horsepowers of the same year as well. There are a bunch of Evinrude blues, so you'll have to refer to a chart to see which are the possibilities to fit your motor. Tempo is the main brand, http://www.tempoproducts.com/ . They sell that brand here in the Marine Store. Use Engine Paint in the Search box and you should find that info there as well.

Go to your Jonny/Rude dealer. Give them your model year and ask to see a can of touch up paint for the cover and lower unit. Lowers had at least two different colors as I ran into that with a 40 HP I wanted to touch up. Don't know about the white but If my memory serves me right it was pure white. (But then I am a duffer so although I have a good memory -- its not very long!)

Re: Need colors for a 'rude conversion

I went in to the dealer today and got the white- it's common to both Johnson/Rude/Sea Ray. The blue is the issue though- I'm putting the cover with these replacement stickers on an '81 Johnson, so I don't have a model number or anything to go by. Does anyone have an Evinrude with that style cover decal? What year is it? I know they had this style of sticker factory- I remember our neighbor years ago having one like that and I think it was a 9.9 unfortunately, we aren't near that lake anymore to go look at it, and the neighbor, well, no help there...

There is a blue that they used from (I think) '78-87 and I think that is it- a light blue metallic...

I can't believe that not even the dealers have a pictoral history of old decal/covers from Evinrude and Johnson since they changed every year- that's just ridiculous... but it's common I'm finding out.

The light blue metallic you speak of is evinrude part #172757 for the touch up spray can. I believe evinrude calls it sivler blue metallic. Just used it to touch up my 1983 75 HP Evinrude hood. I think that is the one you want. For your search of decals and other paint code items go to evinrude.com and check the engine diagrams, they have them for almost every year dating back to 1968. Just look under the paint chart section of the engine diagrams.

Thanks for that tip! I did buy the paint you're talking about, I sort of remembered that color and saw that it had a large spread of years it was used... I guessed right! LOL!

Anyway, I painted the cover today, and will paint the lower unit tomorrow.

Thanks again- I'll post some results...
