just finished rebuilding a older aero-craft coho al. boat.new transom and floor.both very solid.the problem i seem to have is that this boat is mostly a flat hull with a rounded bow.at medium speeds it runs great but as soon as you hammer it the boat will settle down in the front and start to dig in.is there anything out there that will force the bow up?i understand that this boat is not a speed demon but i would expect better bowlift then it has.

17 1/2 foot boat 1982 90 evinrude.the steering and seats are far foward.im sure this boat is more for work than play.weight capacity is 2086 lbs.is about 6 foot wide or so with a long flat bottom.ivre got it trimed out the farthest i can .i know there are lots of products to flatten a boat out but dont see any to make the bow rise.

Re: need bow lift.

Trim the engine out. If you don't have power trim, just move it out one notch. If that doesn't do it, move it out two.

By moving it out, I mean you'll be tilting the lower unit away from the transom. The leverage will force the bow up.

If you have power trim, then trim up a little and you'll find it lifts the bow nicely.
Edit:
Oops! I just noticed that you have it trimmed all the way out. Is the transom at an angle other than vertical? If so, you might be able to trim out further with some sort of wedge between the transom and the engine.

Re: need bow lift.

thanks ive been thinking of that myself lately.personally i think its just the style of the boat and old age.it doesnt look like it but maybe the keel is bent from years of abuse.i am going to save up to buy eith a new boat or a good used one so i will live with what i have for the meantime.i was thinking of just buying a boat and using my old motor till she tires out which wont be anytime soon .

Re: need bow lift.

went out and took a peek at the barge.the transom is not vrrtical in design.i used 3 pieces of 1/2 laminated plywood on the inside and added 1 on the outside for 2 inch max width.how about if i loosen the bolts for the motor and add 1/2 or 1 inch of plywood to the lower mounting area?lets say a 5inch by 12 inch piece?

What we used to do if possible, is move the steering, & controls to the center deck if you have one, or build one if you can. Any boat will ride better if you put most of the weight back behind midships.

Where is the A/V plate of the motor in relation to the bottom of the boat? If the prop is too low in the water, the whole boat will be too low in the water.

the av plate is exactlly even with the bottom of the boat .i will experiment with the wedge idea and if it works will make good wedges or buy the ones for sale on iboats.got to work the next few days will get back with results and what i did to get the old scow to run better.wish i had a v hull it would make life a lot easier.

Re: need bow lift.

If you have a pad in the stern vs. a vee, you should be able to really get the hull out of the water. If your A/V plate is level with the pad, you could stand to move the motor up a hole or two. It would put much less hull in the water.

Re: need bow lift.

could there be a hook in the hull?

think weight & balance. a set-back would move the CG back some & let ya run the motor higher.

the motor: pretty sure she's givin ya all she's got?

let's see some pics!

Re: need bow lift.

on my next days off i will experiment with or by putting spacers between the bottom of the motor and the transom.if it works out i will bite the bullet and either get the reverseable transom wedges or the panther one which states it can give you 5 degrees more tilt.by looking at the rear of the boat i think i have a little to much tuck in.

Re: need bow lift.

It looks like you have a Stingray hydrofoil on the motor in the pic. That could push your bow down if it's not running clear of the water at higher speeds. Try removing it and see what happens. Your might also try raising your motor on the transom a little and test.

I hate to bring it up, but that signature line is pretty darned rude. You might want to think about it a little more.

Re: need bow lift.

took the stingray off ,no diff, raised the engine ,worsre.for all the time it will take i will try the spacers .if the spacers give you a 5 degree extra trim angle that should translate into maybe just enough to keep the front of the boat out of the water at hight speed.its almost there but not quite ,if you know what i mean.also im not sure if it makes a diff or not but this boat was designed for outboard or i/o.maybe at one time it was an i/o and somebody already changed the transom a long time ago.all the gauges or switches are there allready, such as blower motor etc.
