Need answer quick!!!!switching 2.3 sterndrive to 3.0 Sterndrive???

Hello,

I have a 1989 2.3 omc cobra on my bayliner capri I had a problem with the last stern drive so i have a found a replacement for it but it is off a 3.0 of the same year will this be a problem will it work without a problem now or in the future.

Ok this is a very similar to my problem just one thing he was switching to a 93 3.0 I am changing to stern drive which is 3.0 it is the same year omc cobra as mine just 3.0 instead of 2.3 like mine i noticed you said they vary year to year will this work the same will i have to switch prop and do shift linkage adjustments???

the gear ratios will be different. You can try a lower pitch propeller, and it should work. There was a guy on this forum a few years back tried it and did not succeed...tried several pitches lower and boat would just not plane.
Seloc manual has charts in the back where you could compare ratios and see how far off they are.
What pitch prop are you running now behind the 2.3?
If 21P or 23P, I say you should be ok
If you are running a 15 or 17 now... it will be dicey

Ok so what you are saying is i will be ok with a higher pitch prop you were right i am currently running a 17 from what i read the gear ratios for the 2.3 is 21:21 and the 3.0 is 21:18 from what a boat mechanic has told me i would not be able to tell the difference but i just gotta get a second opinion to know if it will work

Ok well went out there today to get my 3.0 outdrive on my 2.3 motor had to take it to my mechanic because I did not have the allignment tool but he did it for me and got the outdrive on I went and dropped it in the lake for a test and voila the boat ran even better than before I am getting more speed a smoother ride not dicey at all I am running a 17 pitch prop working GREAT!!!!
