Drive is an alpha, gen 1, bought 1994. Have only broken it in half for 1st time now to do water pump. Is there an exploded parts diagram floating around?
My questions are, as multiple people were involved in the job parts seemed to disappear,

on the (5) 7/16 locknuts that hold it together, are there washers present on any?
on the one bolt located where the zinc trim anode is, does that supposed to have any washer?

do water pump kits come with, or are supposed to come with, the seal that goes around the driveshaft which is located in the upper? It's the one pressed into the upper, which the driveshaft from the lower slides into when reassembling. You can reach it with your fingers. Does this seal or bushing come in contact with gear lube on the inside?

"do water pump kits come with, or are supposed to come with, the seal that goes around the driveshaft which is located in the upper?"

no they dont..

"Does this seal or bushing come in contact with gear lube on the inside?"

no it dosnt.. it keeps water out of the spline area and runs on the shaft just below the splines.. it also keeps any grease thats put on the splines in there.. the larger upper seal does the real business.. the o-ring that was fitted to the shaft on older units is no longer considered necessary.. some shafts dont have the groove for it..

its a normal small oil-seal not a bushing and is very often missing or dysfunctional cos lots of folks dont know its supposed to be there and it dosnt get looked at..

prize the old one out with a screw driver and useing a socket of the appropriate size carefully tap the new one in lip facing inwards flat side facing outwards.. smear a big dab of grease in there before u mate the two halves of the drive back together and dont forget that teeny-weeny little o-ring that goes around the small oil passage that links the two drive halves oil-wise..

trog
