Hi,
I was given this motor (E48ESLEIM) and it is fresh water low hours and excellent condition motor that is the same as my pontoon 1994 50 HP (except different carbs).
Runs great after tuneup and I want to keep it as spare, but there is one problem:

It has some kind of "tilt-assist" with lever and cylinder ( see pics).
The way I understand cylinder is under pressure and when you turn lever it brings engine up and down.

It does not work. No sign of life at all.
When I turn cylinder upside down, I see fluid coming out from top around the shaft. Probably leaking seal?
My guess that pressure is gone.

Manual says: "do not try to disassemble".
Is there a way to fix\rebuild it to bring back to life?
The new one is around $1K, so I would not spend this kind of money.

Thanks.

No one had this problem I guess...

If I want to find used PT&T unit for this motor what would be the correct one?
Any advice?

The 48 special was made to be cheaper...that's what "special" means I guess. I looked at 50 HP in that year and couldn't find any new ones just parts. I did find this company (not sure their real) and they rebuild them. 1st picture is what I believe is the one you would want and the 2nd link is there home page. Call them and maybe they will know more info.... possible able to rebuild your assist ram or get you the part number to the power t&t and you can look online for a used one. Hope this helps.

This seal is leaking (last 3 pics).
Anyone has expedience with such things?
How do I take this out?
Is there any chance to find replacement?

Just to Incase you were expecting the tilt assist to lift the motor it will not. It will only assist in making it easier to lift. On the down fall it will assist you in controlling the drop and you can stop it anywhere you like by turning the lever.
I can’t help you in finding a seal but if you do let us know. Its a pretty common problem.

I wonder if that tilt assist piston is the same one as is to found on the evinrude outboard brackets. If so, you can probably get one on E-bay for around a hundred dollars and just transfer it. I have one in my garage and it is quite powerful

I'm in Costa Rica right now so it is hard to step in my garage, but you should google "OMC outboard bracket" go onto the page and click on "images" There is a lot of interesting stuff . If you have a part number you can also contact a boat junkyard. I think there is a list of them at the top of the page of Johnson/ Evinrude motors

I just looked at the pictures again and I wonder now if you could just replace the piston with a 12 volt marine actuator of the same size. that you could jerry rig in place of the piston

The tilt assist is meant to make manual tilting easier. On motors where it is available, it makes one hand tilting a heavy motor easy even for old geezers like me.
