Have a '99 Johnson 175 and lost my manual. Need to know how to change the various fluids - oil, etc, also the lower unit. Guess I need to ask "Uh, how do I do this?" since if I want to actually use the boat this year, will have to save $$ somewhere - know what I mean? ANY guidance will be appreciated.

Changing lower unit oil

Use 80-90 lower unit oil.

There are 2 straight slot screw on the starboard side of the lower unit. Top is vent plug, bottom, drain and fill plug. ( do not touch Phillips head screw).

Remove the bottom plug, put container under lower unit, now remove the vent plug, while the oil is draining, replace the seals on the plugs part # 311598, buy several of these, ( they are a one time use item)

Walmart and many places sell a little hand pump. To use to fill the unit, you insert the tube into the bottom hole, and pump till oil reaches the vent hole. Install the vent screw, then remove hose, install the drain-fill screw, clean up mess.

The screws can be hard to get out, do not mess up the head. You may need to employ an impact screw driver to break them loose.

Already singing it's praises huh? LoL

As for changing oil, is the motor a 2-stroke or a 4-stroke? If it's a 2-stroke, you don't change the oil, you just fill the oil tank and the engine mixes it for you with the gas, unless you have removed the VRO pump, in which case you mix the oil and fuel yourself, 50:1.

Those are the only 2 fluids I can think of involved with an outboard, other than greasing the fittings.

If it's a 4-stroke, I honestly don't know, never even seen under the hood of one.

Re: Need Advice

You can get them online or at your local OMC repair facility. Maybe even some marine stores, but I'm not positive about that. I usually order mine whenever I order parts, and I order a couple sets of them, that way I have spares should I need them.

Redfishgirl, Change the gearcase oil as the others have described. You will want to use a synthetic gear oil (IMHO) for that motor. Buy the qt size and the pump that goes with it. Fill the oil resvoir located in the boat somewhere with any 2 cycle oil rated TCW-III. Clean the main gasoline strainer which is located under the airbox. The airbox is removed by removing the cowling, and then the four round rubber straps. The main strainer is the white plastic knurled knob in the center of the front of the motor. Make sure the seals on it go back on properly. Now pump some marine grease into the zerc grease fittings on the transom clamp. Tilt the motor up all the way, and remove the trim resvoir cap. It is round and white plastic with a small slotted head for a screwdriver. Fill it with Dextron III Auto trans fluid.
