That's not many hours at all for an engine to have, so it should be in pretty good shape if it's been well maintained.
The fuel gauge could have and of a number of problems - first, it could be an electrical problem between the fuel tank sender and the gauge, second it could be power to the gauge, third it could be a bad sender in the fuel tank.
I'd recommend you post to the "Electrical" or "Mercruiser I/O" section of this board with a specific description of the gauge problem and also search the electrical section for a procedure to check for the problem.
