My boat is a 94 CC Crowne 340, 5.7 Pentas, Hurth 630Vs, port tranny has bad shaft seal. I want to do the removal/replacement myself (on land) but have a pro fix the seals etc. I'd like to hear some stories/ideas/advice to prep for this gut-busting nightmare.
I figure just about every bolt, nut, and flange hasn't moved since boat was new. Yes, PB Blaster is my best friend... Hope some experiences will help anticipate things. A few questions:
1. Is it easier to unbolt the tranny or the bell housing? Seems like most bolts on the tranny and the bell housing are hard reach. The housing bolts just seem a little easier to get.
2. What's a good way to block the engine while the tranny is out?
3. Has cooling the shaft & heating the coupler ever helped get it off? I had an idea to ice down the shaft then torch the coupler just before attempting to pull it. After I get the shaft nut off, I'd pull the prop to reduce the heat sink effect the prop would have.
4. Does the shaft fit snugly inside trans output shaft? I don't think cooling the shaft will help if it fits snugly as I would just be cooling down the tranny.
5. What kind of flange puller is used to remove the coupler? My yard has a hydraulic puller, I think that should do the trick.
6. Is the coupler splined or keyed on the shaft? If keyed, is the shaft tapered like the prop end?
That's it for now. TIA
