Re: need advice for saltwater rod and reel
I've been fishing the Rhode Island waters for years. I have at least 40 rod and reel combos and everyone has a Penn reel on it. For stripers and blues I use the GLS series reels these are a fantastic reel but are somewhat pricey. I also have a bunch of Jigmasters that are great reels and are more economical than the GLS's. For shark and tuna I use the Senators, and for deep trolling with wire line I use the 49's. For rods I had a friend of mine make me some extremely nice heavy and stiff rods, I like the stiff rods because I am out there for sport but I am also looking to make a few bucks and like to use a rod with the backbone to crank in a large bass. At the local sports store I think it's the Sports Authority they have a good selection of rods and reels. I bought a few Daiwa Eliminator rods that were reasonbly priced and hold up well. I have some older St. Croix rods that do a decent job but are on the lighter side. And Penn also has a good selection of rods, Offshore Angler has some rod and reel combos that are nice and priced pretty reasonable. And for some low end rods I also bought at The Sport Authority I have some Tidewaters that also held up great, I have even caught some large sharks on the Tidewaters. I always keep a couple 6-61/2 ft. spinners on board for snagging pogy I use the Ugly Sticks for this plus a couple older ones I've had made. As far as bait I do alot of chunking and use a gill net to load up on pogies. And early in the year I use heron that I get at the local herring runs. Do well live lining these in Narragansett Bay. And the number one bait as the season progresses is live lining with eels after dark.
