I am rebuilding a 19' 86 Sea Nymph CC (rated for up to 140HP) w/o a motor and have found an older trihull with the subject motor. Unfortunately the deal is if I buy it, I take motor, trailer and boat. It is a good deal ($1500 negotiable) but I am unsure about the reliability of this engine. It was running last summer and was tuned up and Stator replaced ($400 invested). I plan to check it out soon and will do normal inspection looking for corrosion from saltwater, oil in lower unit, try running with muff, etc. Advice about anything else I need to beware of before purchase?? Thanks in advance for any input.

If you are planning to buy it just to get the engine, it is not a good deal at all. 25 year old crossflow V4s can be had for well under $1K.

If the Sea Nymph is irrelevant and you are looking at a replacement rig, we need to know more about the boat before we can advise you responsibly.

Good luck. :)

Thanks JB,
I was thinking about it just for the engine since I don't need the rest. However, I would then try to sell off the boat and trailer to finish the deal. I appreciate the advice about the value of the engine and will probably pass on the deal unless I get a good report from teh mechanic that serviced it.

Don't know how things are in PA, but in New England unless the hull is pristine its value is less than zero. It's real hard (i.e., expensive) to get rid of old boat hulls here.

The OMC V4s are reliable motors, but JB's right about the value of a '79 100. If you have $1000-1500 to spend, I'd be looking for a mint 88SPL/90hp OMC V4s from the early 1990s, hopefully with power trim. The 1986 horsepower rerate means a late-model 88/90hp is roughly equivalent to a 1985 and earlier 115hp.

That era V4 (1979+\-) in my limited experience has had flaky charging problems - the 'new stator' certainly got my attention. If the stator fixed it, good, but it may be just the last in a long string of expensive new electrical components.

If you get to the point of having it looked at, darn sure get a compression check done if nothing else.
As for above replies, I also agree on holding on to the thousand bucks, and start looking for a post-85, as mentioned. There's a ton of good V4's out there of that vintage, and if you keep your eyes open, they will show up here and there.

bought a 86 115 V4 two years ago for $900 installed. That motor is still on that boat today without any big issues. I would shop around or you will end up a fiberglass yard ornamnet.

Re: Need Advice-- 79 100 HP Evinrude

I sure am glad I checked in with the experts. Boards like this are invluable for novices like me getting into an upgrade from small water to big water craft. Looking forward to expanding my fishing to waters like Lake Erie and the eastern Bays which is why I bought the Sea Nymph in Chincoteague last summer. Really appreciate the advice and will check back in for other opinions as I continue my search for a good engine.

Thanks.

I'd be looking for compression in the 125 range. Likely the carbs will need to be rebuild. Change the lower unit fluid and check for water intrusion. None of the original fuel lines under the cowling are rated to handling today's ethanol fuels. They all need to be replaced, and the fuel pump rubber components also. After years, the ignition wiring under the cowl may start to deteriorate-check for flexibility on the wire harnesses-look for insulation cracks. The main starter cables may be starting to weather also. Change the fuel line to the tank. Most important, put a new impeller in the lower. Discard any old fuel in the tank. These engines tended to accumulate carbon around the rings, so a decarb may be in order.
