Sorry, don't want to overstay my welcome, but none of the documentation I have shows the information I need.

Just a small question, does anyone happen to know off the top of their head, the torque specs for the lower unit on a 1961 Evinrude Big twin 40, I have put my lower unit back together and am ready to put it back on the motor, but for the life of me can't seem to find the specs for the bolts?

Thanks.

I have ordered one, just figured I would ask, because it won't be here for a few days and I would like to go fishing this weekend, before our Montana weather goes south for the winter.

But it seems if it must be a well guarded secret!

That is what these forums are for. Post your questions, in the appropriate Forum.

To be honest with you, I don't torque the bolts that hold the lower unit on. I would be willing to bet that there are very few that bother to do so. Snug them up good and tight and you will be good to go.

I don't either, I looked in my 40hp info and there are no torque specs, tighten them up but don't overdo it.

I use a couple of drops of blue loctite (NOT RED) on the threads for peace of mind. Tighten them in stages using a criss-cross pattern, recheck after a couple of hours of use. As stated before, they don't need to be gorilla tight. The housing they screw into is aluminum, can be stripped with too much force.

Per the manual: Unless otherwise specified, torque reading for standard screws---

#10 screws = 25-35 inch pounds
#12 screws = 35-40 inch pounds
1/4" screws = 60-80 inch pounds
5/16 screws = 120-140 inch pounds
3/8 screws = 220-240 inch pounds
