I have a 1972 21 ft. Boston Whaler Outrage. It has a 94 225 yamaha 25 inch shaft on a hi jacker. It is counter rotating and has a 14x17 prop. I currently am turning 6500 plus rpms when trimmed out.

I don't wanna lose alot of power, I normally take 6-8 people out when we go, but the current prop doesn't have any problems even at high speeds.

I am ready to buy a new one, Any suggestions???

Thanks.

Welcome, please read the stickies at the top of the page.
What is the speed at 6,500? Is that with a light load? What do you want to accomplish with a prop change. What issues do you have with the present prop?

Ok, stickies read.

I suppose I am looking for more speed. It runs between 44 and 46 with a light or heavy load at 6500 rpms. I mean 6500 rpms is way over recommended wot rpm. And I have to admit I am one of those people who likes to put the throttle down. My Dad has a 28 foot black fin and he shouldn't be passing me in my opinion. But besides that, If I Keep the rpms around 5500 I only go about 38-40 mph.

My prop now is stainless steel and I am pretty sure it is 14 diameter and 17 pitch.

I wanna go up in pitch but just was wondering if I should go with a 19 or 21. I did not wanna go to high and lose alot of power.

General rule of thumb a 2" pitch change will change rpm 300 to 400.
It appears an increase in pitch will likely improve your top end but will slow your hole shot some.
Dhadley can tell you in more detail what may work best.

We'll assume you have a 3 blade. An aggressive 4 blade will bring the r's down about 400 or so, maybe a shade more, depending on what brand & style prop you have and what condition it's in.

Re: Need a Prop reccomendation???

I can't read the stamp on the inside of the hub, all I could make out was Y1417, which I assumed was diameter and pitch. The prop is in great shape, its three bladed and does have some small round port holes at the base, I would say they are about the size of a 5/16th driver head.

This seems more confusing than I thought, I mean, you have to just buy a prop and hope it does what you want, once you use it you can't send it back.

Thats why I was hoping to get some inshight.

There should be numbers under the prop nut.You really need to confirm the number. Number does seem to indicate Yamaha 14/17.mabe a prop shop can measure to confirm pitch.
The holes are intended to improve hole shot.
