Need a place for a part....

Well the boat and motor I traded for yesterday, has a small problem, not much really, but they had taken the lower unit off the motor and told me it was getting water in it, no big deal, new seal kit and should be good to go, Right!

I brought the lower unit into the shop this morning to get it under the lights, and found out is has a hole in the lower gear case, this is a 1961 Evinrude Big Twin 40, model number 35023, it is the split case design that was so common to these motors. So where would be a good place to possibly pick up a new/used bottom part of the gear case? The gears and everything else looks great, no rust, no burrs, no corrosion, so it didn't get much water in it..

The PO tried to repair it with JB weld or something of that nature, and of course that didn't take very well. In the old parts manual I found online it lists this part number as 377483

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

do a Google search for used outboard motor parts, you'll be surprised at the results

Thanks oldcat,

Been there done that, searched by part number, name, and other various terms with no luck, which is why I posted here..

I really do try to research things before I post a question on here.

I've had good luck with parts on EBAY if you know exactly what you are looking for and don't mind buying on Ebay. Not sure how familiar you are with Ebay but you can put in a "saved search" and they will email you when an auction for what you are searching for comes up.

You may have better luck trying for a used lower unit for parts. Try the salvage yards.

BTW, I think that the part number that you are using is the whole case, not just the skeg. The skeg was not generally listed as a separate part.

The bottom half was never available by itself. The lower unit was machined as an assembly. A used bottom may or may not match up, but probably will.

Re: Need a place for a part....

Well good news, after further tear down, no cracks at all, but what was leaking water was the pivot screw hole, they had trashed the O ring and instead of replacing it with the correct part, they decided that slathering silicone on the inside of the pivot hole and then outside on the screw head was better than a $0.10 O ring! Doh!

Looks like all it needs is a good clean up and then replace seals and it will be back to new shape!

I will pick up a complete seal kit at the marine shop on Monday and clean everything up.

I also pulled the drive shaft gear and some of the roller bearings jarred out of place, so figured I should place them back in place, using some type of grease to hold them in place while putting back together, so any recommendations on what type of grease would be ok to work in the gear housing?

Thanks, its been about 20 years since I did one of these and just want to make sure I get it right, because if I do, next weekend will be spent on the lake going after large cutts, macks and perhaps some BIG northern Pike!

Thanks Captk,

I am curious though because the lower cap does have a separate part number on it?

Thanks Captk,

"On it" is the clue. That is a casting number, not a part number. The upper and lower parts were cast separately, then partially machined. Then the two parts were bolted together and THEN the inside was bored and finished. As a result, no one part from one motor will exactly match up with the opposite from another motor. They are sold only as a matched pair.

Ok, ok, I realize that people have mis-matched them and gotten away with it, sometimes. But if I had a matched set, darned if I would sell you half of my set. That would leave me with half a set that may not be of any use. Unless you wanted to pay for the complete set and accept only half. That wouldn't be too smart.

Ok,

I was just curious and asking a question to gain knowledge I don't currently have! Some people are amazing, I thought these forums were to learn..maybe I was mistaken...

Crap I only have two degrees, unfortunately neither of them are in marine engineering or mechanical engineering...my expertise was from West Point as an officer and then Washington State in biology, not a lot of machine work involved in these areas...

Thanks for the help!

Try Vaseline to hold the rollers in place.
