I need info on using an inboard outboard and have been searching the forums. there are forums that tell you how to fix your engine or fix your boat or how to catch fish but not one dedicated to how to use your boat I feel it is needed for people like me who migrate from a 12' alluminum row boat to a i/o oe inboard. or something over 16' there are bits and pieces in all forums but many pages to access

Re: need a new forum

ok M Y

Here's what i don't know and am a little worried about. do I start with the trim up all the way or down all the way. I have noticed a few things like when i am going slow and trim is high I don't have much control. when I take off am I supposed to start in low trim and when I get to plain go all the way to the high side or somewhere inbetween. do I just bump the trim up or down or do I go from one extreme to the other. I am lost and have no idea what i'm doing.

I bought a manual hoping for instructions for maintenence of the out drive but instead it tells me how to rebuild the engine and such. I want to make sure it is full of oil and what type of oil to use and where to put it in and where to check it. also do I grease the outdrive somewhere? I do have a lot of questions. this morning I was told why my speedometer was not working because the plastic unit on the back of the boat was pointed toward the rear instead of down. things like this I did not have to deal with when I had my 12' valco. My new to me boat is a 81 Bellview made in Fresno Ca. It is 18' and has an omc stern drive with a chevy v-6 The starter solenoid is clicking so I will soon have to replace that and soon since I cannot row it. I had to cross the contacts on the solenoid once this weekend. Thanks for responding to my post.

Gary Wolfer---For starters welcome to IBoats.I am not a whiz on boat knowledge but will try to pass on some of what I have learned here and on the water.
Starting out(Hole shot)-Trim all the way down until planed out.Practice bumping trim up until the boat porpoises then bump down to smooth ride.
The service guy where I got my 16ft bowrider 3ltr 130 horse I/O said that if I tried a hole shot with trim all the way up I could flip over backwards.I went back 2 or 3 times and he showed me all those oil and fluid ports and specs.Could be worthwhile for you.
There are a lot of great guys here that can answer your technical questions.Happy Boating!!!!!!!

G.W. judging by the questions you are asking, you should consider a boaters operating course. Coast Guard and Power Squadron offer them, and you will be amazed at what you will learn.

Just take your boat to your local dealer and he should point out all you need to know about the lubes and such.

One small detail, it would not be very wise to cause sparks anywhere there is a chance of gas fumes being, it could cause you much problems.

Also, as Bart said, start out with trim all the way down and then play with the trim button to get the right ride out of it.

Also would not hurt as was stated by JDK to maybe take a boaters safety course. It won't hurt and may save you from a disaster.

Good luck with the new to you boat and safe boating.

Gary, make sure your OMC does in fact have trim. My family had an older OMC and it had tilt, but not trim. You cannot use tilt like trim. Tilt must be down the whole way when in gear or you will wipe out your gears. Best check with the dealer that sold you the boat. If you purchased from an individual, find a reputable dealer in your area who will service the boat for you. Then ask them, they should be happy to help you.

I agree that "how to use your boat" is a very imprtant topic. I think our Boat Questions section would be perfect for such a topic.
