Hi I have a 1990 bayliner 2070 l drive with a 120 I'm having a shifting problem I can get the gears to work on the trailer but when I hit the water and cruise I end up losing reverse. I replaced the cable 20 years ago and I could never get it right I think the cable was to Long now from my understanding there's only 2 cables for the l drive a 13 and 14 foot cable I have a 14 please help

Your best bet is to spend whatever it takes to get an OEM manual that covers your specific engine and drive, prepare to do it yourself and then hope parts are available.

The length, long or short can make a difference.
Too short. Can actually pull it out of gear.
Too long is not so bad.
After 20 years you remember what size came out???
What's on there now?

What caused you to have to replace the cable when it was only 3 years old? Any other damage perhaps to the shift mechanism? Describe "losing reverse".... It won't go in, won't stay in, just grinds, does nothing??

We were told to replace them bc we did water skiing I do realize now that's a bunch of bs. What happens is the shifter won't go into reverse . Is there a special way to adjust the shift cable.

Try unhooking the cable at the drive.MOTOR OFF!!
Then shift the drive by hand, turning the prop as you do it.
Then move the shifter around.F N R then see if the connectors match.
Adjust as needed.
Or bring it by and I'll help :)

Yeah we did that everything is good. Do u think I need the 13 foot cable instead of the 14 it jus seems a lot of slack under there and the load from the water is pulling it out of adjustment

Post a pic of the under side.
The cable shouldn't really stick down in the water.
