Need a Honda BF50 camshaft.....

Hello,

A came across some bad information that a BF40 is a detuned BF50 only with a throttle limiting device. After buying a BF40 dirt cheap, I was highly dissappointed at the power it made in comparison to my old boat with a BF50. Further internet research has shown that a BF50 has different intake valves, ignition timing, camshaft and carburator.

To try to make the best of this situation, I plan on installing a BF50 camshaft and doing some drilling modifications on the coil assembly pulser to advance the timing 5-10 degrees. I was hoping these two things could get me into the 47-48hp range. Taking it one step further, I'm considering getting the camshaft re-ground with a slightly hotter profile to try to get back to the full 50hp. The low rpm performance is not as important to me.

EDIT: Sorry, soliciting to buy is not allowed on the board. Try the Wantads. http://www.iboats.com/boats/marine--1/boating_want_ads--108
Thanks!

Sorry 'bout that, I understand. Although, do any of you think think this approach might work or should I just take a loss, sell the BF40 and get a BF50?
Thanks again.

Hello,
Though I am not the big outboard mechanic and tuning specialist I have learned one thing in Life. These homemade approaches never get as good as factory produced, it costs you a lot of time and money. In the end you are disappointed and sell it anyway to bye the reaql stuff. Why not do it directly. If you like to tune and screw do it because thats another story. I have the same problem with my Honda 40 and thought about the same thing, but fourtunately the power is just good enough for my 17 Fletcher. The guys where I biught it from had changed the carbs already. Do you know if this already gives more power than 40 h.p.?
Regards Holger
Holger

You might consider getting the BF40 camshaft reground to the spec's your looking for.
The carb's are the same but you'll want the BF50's main jets.
The grind will be cheap and so are main jets. The ignition control unit will be the pricey item.
Depending on the grind, a greater lift might make up for the smaller valve diameter.
Then again, a little head work on the valve seat, specifically the 75deg. cut would likely open it up enough for the BF50 valve. When your in there you could port and polish, flush cut the guides, mill the heads and cc the combustion chambers for premium fuel.
Shoot.... might as well plumb it for nitrous while your there.......have that puppy up to 110hp. ;)

Sounds like alot of work for 10 hp.Plus you are now creating an engine with no resale value as parts have been modified with no way to cross reference what has been done. This can, of course, conceivably,be done, but as a practical matter, you will have so much time tweaking, syncing, experimenting, etc ad nauseum that you will wonder why you dropped the trade option.
