I'm trying to troubleshoot carburetor problems on my Merc. 1998 9.9 four stroke. I've followed some of the old threads, and found a lot of useful info. I have a Seloc manual and a Merc. parts diagram, but there's not much detail. I've removed and cleaned the carb as best I know how, but it's still not quite right on idle. Before I do much more, I need two things:
1. A real manual specifically for this engine 0H013715, 232cc.
2. A source for a new electric choke module (starter set)
I've spent a lotof time on various websites including this one and got a lot of "almost what I want"
Otherwise, I'm gonna have to ask you all a lot of dumb questions.

I greatly appreciate it. More time on the water, less time scratching my head.

Your s/n comes up as:

MERCURY - ( 9.9 H.P. (1998 ))
Serial No: 0H013715 Model No: 1F10312UD

Parts and Service Bulletin list for s/n 0H013715:

Search Results - Crowley Marine

For the starter set, see item 3 under CARBURETOR.

The service manual you require is P/N: 90-827857R1. See my message to you in Notifications at the top of this page.

It is my understanding that the air/mixture screw you need to adjust in hidden behind a cap on the carb. It has been my experience that when cleaning a carb you have to be able to run some stiff fishing line through ever tiny port and passage in the carb, then blow it out with high pressure air or your wasting your time

Read the post further down the mercury forum! This is a common problem with the idle circuit. Once cleaned properly it will run well.

Hawker; Indeed, there is a capped jet (I guess it's a jet) in the main air passage. Not the pilot or the main jet, which are easy to get to. There is also a group of tiny passages in the top of the main air passage in front of and behind the closed throttle plate. They are also capped. I take them to be idle air passages. I didn't break the seal cause I wasn't sure it was needed, and I wasn't sure I'd find anything under the seal anyway. I would go back & do that if I was convinced.
Star, I will do that.

15hp 4 stroke only runs with the choke out on the next page. the !5 and the 9.9 is the same motor with a bigger carb

Okay, read that thread.
I started the motor in the trash can after cleaning the carb. After about an hour & a half, sometimes under load, it seem to be running really well at low speed. When testing, the choke solenoid seemed to move very slowly, like maybe three minutes. Doesn't seem right. I started the motor with the accelerator pump, but that may not work so well in cold weather.
I still cannot find a source for the choke, accelerator pump diaphragm, or rebuild kit. Lots of parts listings but all unavailable. It's a Teikei carb, a Yamaha supplier, but can't find parts that way either. What do people do for parts for these things?
