Well I guess the great deal I got on that motor wasn't so great after all. Checked the lower and found no oil and also discovered a crack that has been patched before but is leaking bad. EDIT Also does anybody know what years and models will fit? Thanks in advance

Go to the Top Secret File ^^^, TC. Check with the salvage yards listed there.

Good luck :)

aomci.org is a great place to look too. As a matter of fact, I have a '65 Johnson FD-19 18hp parts motor that should work. EDIT Do you have a pic of your crack.....on the motor?

Don't try to use just the skeg. You need the whole hsg as they are line bored from the factory. Don't know how bad it's damaged but I've used gray marine tex to repair them and it has worked.

TIG welding with Argon works well too if you know a local welder.

As Boobie stated, ideally you want a whole gearcase, not just the skeg piece.

Ended up going down to Tractor Supply and bought some Hobart aluminum brazing rod, its low temp (710 degrees) and can be used with a propane torch. I had never tried it before and it worked great. You need to clean it up very well and use a stainless steel brush to remove any oxidation then it works kind of like solder but much harder material. It even say on the package that it can be used on outboard motor castings! Once you get the piece up to temp you let the piece melt the rod and it flows quite well with no flux required. You get 8 rods 18 inches long for 15 dollars. I used less than half a rod. I know there are other ones on the market too like Alumiweld and Durafix but they cost more for less product. I also used it to kill in a couple of nicks and gouges on the skeg. I'm sure this stuff has been around for years. I cant believe I have lived this long without it! Good stuff. Thanks for the offers and suggestions though.

Thanks for the good tip. Nice to know it can be used with a propane torch.

Yeah that thing welded up really nice. Did a little filing and sanding and you cant even see the repair. Now one more question, I filled it with gear oil and it doesn't leak a drop but I just saw in another thread marine gear oil mentioned. Whats the difference between that and regular automotive 80/90 wt?

The marine stuff has additives in case of water intrusion.

It is also made for a sealed system, whereas the auto stuff is vented.

When you use the auto stuff in an outboard it usually turns an ugly yellow colour.
