Need 4 cyl volvo penta starter i.d.

I just got a 19' bayliner ciera, 1983, volvo penta, 270 outdrive. It came with no starter... I've had plenty of mercruisers but never one of these. Woule appreciated help identifying engine... only number on it is the serial number 7679011771.....if anyone could give me the part number for the starter that would be greatly appreciated...an Arco number would really be sweet!

That SN isn't coming up in anything Randy, You may have typed it wrong or it's older than the search function.
Look on that tag the SN was on and see if it has a model number, something like AQ125B or similar.

Thanks... it has been painted over but I'll look again. That number was on a tag right over where the starter bolts on at the bell housing. Should be a good number...good for what I can't say....

Finally found it... AQ 125 A.... had to scrape more paint off of the tag with the serial number on it.....now if I can for sure find which starter fits I'll be ready to start working on it.....

ok... the serial number apparently is supposed to have a slash in it... so maybe it is supposed to be 7670/011771.... if so then the starter (ARCO) should be 10110 and the OEM would be 834976-3 or 834339-4.... does this agree with what you can come up with?

Ok...now the really weird question... is the older style starter (without threaded mounting holes) interchangeable with the new ones (with the threaded mounting holes)??????

The Volvo number for the 125A is 834339.

As far as the interchability question, I have no idea. Never tried.

Thanks... I got in touch with a guy a MES who looked it up from Sierra & Arco numbers. He said the starter crosses to the later version with the threaded mounting holes. This starter is lighter and stronger (according to him). He was very helpful.. so, that woman that lives with me is supposed to pick one up from the warehouse on her way home from work and I'll know for sure before in the morning... I may have to use smaller bolts or drill out the threads...don't know yet. Now if I can just get this old junker running & spruced up I'll be forever grateful....then I can sell the big 24' bayliner monterey with the 350 chevy engine and be a little happier. Would love to find a home for that one..it's just too big for me but we loved taking it out for a weekend with the grand kids....it just needs a new home.

Becky got the starter, it bolted right up, so far the only difference is that I don't have to use the nuts that held the old starter on. I'll piddle with it tomorrow and let you know if it cranks the engine with no problem. I also got a manual when I got the starter...so, maybe I'll have a little needed info when I get to seriously working on this thing..
