Hi, I am planning a trip to California coast, and was wondering if anybody could direct me to a basic navigation/chart plotting etc online course or book or something that I could learn basic navigation/ map skills? I know there is no substitute for learning on open water, I just wanted some basic how to info.

much thanks

Re: navigation basics

i'd suggest getting together with your local us power squadron or the uscg aux. they should have some classes for you.
i did the us power squadron thing. they had piloting, advanced piloting, navigation and advanced nav. i believe when i was involved. i got through advanced piloting.

i don't use the skill much and have forgotten much. but i can say with certainty. there is a whole bunch of learning to do to pilot or navigate. i've never seen any online courses that are in depth enough to even begin to teach the basics... don't mean there ain't any, i just never have seen them. maybe someone else knows of something like you want.

good luck with your education.

i did have a great time learning about piloting and did pass... it is very interesting.... likely life saving if your boating in the places that you need these skills even would be my guess...

Re: navigation basics

In addition to any basic navigation course, Also get to know the functions of your GPS, they can help you plot your course and stay in good water as you?re underway.

When I cruise the Chesapeake Bay, I have a cruise guide that tells you about each port of call's local hazards to navigation and the route that you should take on your approach.

Another reference that is good to look at for all around boating is Chapman?s. Don't forget to always monitor your VHF radio when underway.

Good Luck and we would love to see some posts and pics from your trip.

Re: navigation basics

All good suggestions, and a copy of COLREGS wouldn't be bad to have either.
