One part of my basket case '93 Caravelle 1750 BR restoration project is the controls. I have not been able to identify the brand and model, much less find instructions for how they mount to the side of the boat
All of the interior was ripped out before I got it, so I have nothing to go by. I've found photos of these boats with the same controls, but no way to tell how to mount the unit.

Everything seems to move, so I think all it needs is some TLC and a new trim switch.
I would appreciate any info or photos of one of these installed.

Edit: There is a rocker switch in end of the handle, if that helps with identification.

That is an OMC control for a mechanical shift stern drive. Take the handle off to mount it on the side of the interior . Snap off the center button cover to remove the retainer bolt.

Makes sense. Looks like that plastic D-shaped plate behind the handle is the mounting plate. Correct? Seems a bit flimsy. Does that slide off so that the main unit can go in from behind?

BTW, got a link to a picture of your Donzi?

The plate is the mount and there was also a cover that snapped over the mount.
The only way I can send some pictures is through e mail. If you send your e mail in a private message I can get them to you. Thanks

The D shaped plate and the handle fit on the outside of the Boat's side panel. The balance behind the boat's side panel. There are bolts thru the D shaped panel into the control, and wood screws from the D shaped plate into the boat's side panel. You need to drill a hole for the control rod, plus the thru bolts, through the Boat's side panel.

There was a trim piece to hide the bolt heads.

I have one like that on my Johnson outboard or maybe it was my MerCruiser, or maybe both, as it looks to be universal for either Merc or Johnnyrude.

It is a Pretty standard control. You should see a allen head set screw on the bottom of the throttle arm. You may need to move it to clear the trim that covers it.

So I drill the four holes that you mentioned (shaft and three through bolts), and then the D plate and the white piece bolt together through the boats' plywood side panel like a sandwich?

That is correct. If the plywood of the boat side panel is sound, it will be strong enough.

It will be new. What is a typical thickness? I was thinking 3/8". (I got this boat with no interior at all.)

Boat builders tend to use whatever crap they have laying around for side panels. They staple together any pieces of wood they need and cut to shape.

believe boats need to be twice as strong as one would first think, as they take some twisting and pounding. I would use 1/2 " pressure treated plywood for all exposed wood. Side panels tend to get wet inside and rot.
