Mysterious water leak

I have a 96 Alpha 1 Gen 2 (3.0LX). I bought it with a patched cracked block. Two summers ago I replaced the bellows and gimbal bearing. Ever since I've owned the boat (3 years) there's always been a little water coming in. Last fall while winterizing, I noticed the gimbal housing bolts that I could reach were loose. I figured now would be a good time to pull and replace the motor as well as tightening the gimbal housing bolts. I got the motor together and tightened the gimbal housing bolts per the service manual (I think it was 25ft/lbs). I figured before I put the engine in I'd put the drive on and head to the ramp to see if/where it leaks. I'm attaching a picture of where it's leaking. It's not the exhaust pipe and its not coming from the lower shift cable. All I did was use the old big o-ring gasket and a new bellhousing gasket when I put the drive on. The gimbal bearing is out (being replaced...again). Is the leak simply because I didn't use a new gasket and glue it in place as well as the gimbal bearing not being installed? I can put my finger back there and it feels like there's an 1/8" hole below where the gimbal bearing would be. I haven't pulled the drive back off to verify the ujoint bellow is ok but from a decent visual inspection it looked fine. Any thoughts/suggestions before I start tearing things apart more than needed? Thanks!

Re: Mysterious water leak

About the only thing I can see that could contribute to a water leak in that area is the exhaust pipe 'O' ring... Remove the 4 screws holding the pipe on (3/8" 12-point socket) and check the 'O' ring....

My initial thought was the exhaust pipe but its definately not it. The water is coming from an area a little further back and above. I can run my finger along the top of the exhaust pipe and feel water running down from a hole above the exhaust pipe area.

That would indicate water in the uni bellows.... was there any when you pulled the drive?

Are you sure your transom is sound? I've never heard of the bolts coming loose by themselves. It is usually a case of the transom getting some rot in it.
