My buddy, Jim, just rebuilt the raw water pump on his 1996 60 hp Merc. He struggled getting the lower unit back on...and now only has forward gear. Any clue where he went wrong??

He'll take me fishing if I can help him get it dialed in by this coming weekend.

Walt

Misaligned shift rod. Pull back out to readjust. This foot shouldn't give much trouble getting back on. Make sure everything is on the way it came off if you have to drop it down again. GL

Thank you Kev...

I haven't been over to assist him yet but didn't want to show up without a clue how to help him out. I wasn't around when he pulled it down...we'll see what transpires.

Thanks for the response!

Walt

There's a good chance your bud missed that shift shaft completly.Pull the gearcase back down.Don't move the driveshaft but set everything else to neutral, then watch carfully as you put her back together that the shift shaft ,watertube ,etc, are lined up.Driveshaft is ready to slide in if you don't move it.

Walter, I'm having similar problems with my Merc 75. I only have forward after having the lower unit off. Let me know if you figure something out...thanks

i'm not shure how you guys are giving these other people pages from a previosly asked questions but I posted a big article on this subject yesterday for someone else. I put the unit and the boat in reverse or forward and put the unit on the motor. You can still do it in neautral I just find it hareder to do in neautral If I had to say with the way things sound to me you are missing the shift rod that it is moving one way or the other and that the shift shaft isn't lining up with the shift rod

------------------

I read what you posted Nickster...that's an excellant description of this procedure. Jim's gonna log onto this site for the fist time later today... I told him to be certain to read your post...although I wasn't sure if what you described for a 1966 35 hp would pertain to a 1996 60 hp.

From the info received thus far...I don't think there should be a problem getting his gearcase installed properly.

Thanks to all of you!

Walt
