It is at the Painter/Pannelbeaters (P/P) now.
As you know, we were having trouble matching up a new starter motor.
The MWM Diesel Tech (D/T) rang. Said he was assembyling a new D229-3 Stationery (mine is a 1983 D229-4 Vehicular) and as I was after a starter motor, said he would like to try the one off his on mine to see if they were same.
So off we go to the P/P. Starter is a perfect fit, so bolted it on. P/P whipped a battery out of another vehicle in the yard. All D/T wanted to see was if it would turn motor over - didn't need to start it (hasn't been running for ages). Wire to solanoid had different fitting, so D/T said he would cross 2 screw drivers and had me turn on ignition. After 10 mins of mucking around, D/T told me to leave the cab, leave ignition on.
So here we are, D/T leaning over side guard, head under bonnet, me and P/P leaning over front, under bonnet, watching - NOTHING.
Then P/P put a hand on one battery terminal and gave it a twist. Holy-mother-of-god: it didn't wind over, it burst into life with a mighty roar. What a fright it gave us. D/T hit his head on the bonnet and slid down the guard, P/P jumped back, hit me, and we both fell on the ground.
We must have looked like the 3 stooges, or maybe the keystone cops. And this motor is grumbling away.
D/T said, "(begins with F), we were lucky it wasn't in gear, it would have run over us".
Anyway he took the opportunity to check it over and reckons it is running as well as his new one.
He went to a Auto Elec shop in same street as his shop and they matched up a starter straight off, $500, + $50 for spacer, courier $7. It's a monster.
D/T dosn't want any payment. Wants to have a drive when it is finished, plus all the photos I have taken for the MWM web site.
Bit of a boring story I guess but that's it.
Cheers
Phillip
Brief Facts about MWM Brazil
MWM (Motoren Werke Mannheim)is the oldest Diesel Engine manufacturer in the world
MWM was started in Mannheim Germany in 1883 by Karl Benz
MWM Diesel Engines are currently manufactured in
Brazil
The Factory covers 85,000m2
MWM Brazil has over 1470 employees
MWM has invested in over US$970 million in plant and equipment
MWM Produces over 150,000 engines per year
This is what I have:1979 - Ford Brazil releases F-1000 (F100) pick-up truck with the MWM D.229-4 engine.
Mine is a '75 Aussie Built F100. In '83 someone imported a F1000 from Brazil and transfered all running gear and guages in to my '75. D/T tells me only thing not MWM is some bar that regulates fuel as was Left hand drive so now has a caterpillar one (for Right hand Drive).
Navistar I believe currently own or have lot to do with MWM.
