My steering is backwards and it doesn't go in gear

Boy did I have issues at the launch today. I got her in the water after buying a used Stringer drive (I know) and was ready to pull her out turning right and she headed straight left for a sailboat! I try to put it in reverse to avoid ramming the poor old couple and it won't go in gear. Is this the incorrect worm gear on the drive I bought? The thing goes in gear in the driveway no problem but in the water it won't. Is this an adjustment thing or is the cable shot? I would be mad if it wasn't so funny.

That's funny because I came across that a month ago on a whaler with an outboard that a guy just purchased.
His deal was that somebody stuck the wrong cable on the wrong helm... even though it may fit, it's not correct. You probably are going to need a new steering kit as you don't mix and match parts... to dangerous... you replace as an assembly.

As to your shifting, your shift cable from the engine to the drive is probably toast...

OMC made RH and LH steering worm gears to go in the upper gearcase of drives with trucourse steering.

You need to open the top of the upper and swap in the correct parts.

or,... you may be able to flip the cable drum at the steering helm...depends on room under the dash... will require a new hole drilled through the helm shaft too...

3rd option.. i've heard of people rearranging the cable onto the drum at 1 end o the trucourse cable assy... not sure how that goes though... never done it.

Thanks guys I think I'm going to swap the worm gears. As for the shift issue, have you guys ever had a drive do fine on land but in the water with a load it won't shift? In forward it clicks for 10 seconds or so and goes in but in reverse it won't.

Without even considering your particular type of drive, the above statement pretty much describes EVERY dog-clutch drive out there in radio-land...... I.E. you pretty much MUST adjust/test/operate the drive loaded (i.E. "in the water") to get it right. Most all of them will appear to shift "ok" on the trailer.:p
