I have a V6 Merc 150 that has started spinning the starter regardless of key position. The starter was just professionally rebuilt, had been spinning w/ out extention the last time I tried to start it. It extends now but engages the moment the battery is connected at the terminals. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Howdy, Kevlar. Wiring error? Key switch problem? Stuck solenoid?

Get a voltmeter. Across the small terminals on the solenoid should be 0 volts unless key switch is in the start position, then 12.6 volts. If this is incorrect go to the keyswitch. The wire to the solenoid should be 12.6v only when the switch is in the start position.

Across the big terminals should be 12.6 volts except when the key switch is in the start position, then 0 to.5 volts. If this is incorrect, give the solenoid a sharp rap with a light mallet. If that does not correct the problem, replace the solenoid.

Good luck.
Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Make sure the wires are connected to the correct terminals of the solenoid.

KEV, I have seen these solenoids stick in the on position....the solenoids with the 1/4 inch dia post were very suseptible to this...the posts would get loose in the plastic housing and when the solenoid was engaged it would stay on, intil, like JB says you give it a good smack.....

Thanks guys,

I disconnected power to the starter and turned my key to click the solenoid. It was in the wrong position, must have happened when I disconnected batt cables when starter was running. It is fine now.

Thanks again!!
