SWEET! Catch him below the dam? that's where we find them and also at the head of the islands. Couldn't help seeing the sweatshirt. I have a son at Purdon't.

Great! I'm only about an hour and a half from there. Maybe he can show me how to catch them. For some reason I thought you might be in the Louisville area, Clarksville or New Albany.

From the pic. it doesn't looked like he was too far from Newton Stewart ramp, the dam is directly behind him. Them stripers must be roaming in the middle of the lake, there are a couple of humps in his general vincinity. I see them a lot of times schooling a busting shad at the timber field in Lick Fork. Tell him to hi for me from a fellow sig. pi brother (gamma pi chapter, ISU).

Re: My son's first striper.

gonefishie, I used to fish the snot out of Patoka until they raped it by keeping a lot of the spawning size fish. Used to be killer bluegill and crappie. The bass fishing was wonderful for a while also. Went back for a week four or five years ago and didn't do very well although it was the middle of July and hotter than Hades. I knew they stocked the stripes and whites in there but never did any good on them. Talked to the guys that fish it a lot and they say that for some reason the fish are staying mostly in the eastern side of the lake which is the shallower side. Stripers are usually a deep water fish as they need the cooler temps. I don't see the dam behind him but I will take your word for it. If it is by NSRA then that spot should be fairly easy to find. I'm just down here west of E'ville and have to run to Jasper tomorrow. I might stop and talk to a couple of the guys that work the lake and see what has been going on this past summer and maybe get a feel for what they expect next year.

Re: My son's first striper.

Fireman> the dam is way off in the distance past the big point to the right of the rod tip. Not a whole lots of people fish for striper at Patoka, the DNR planning on stop stocking them because striper is an "underutilize" game fish, according to IDNR. I don't go after crappie and bluegill, primarily bass. The bass fishing has been awesome, except for the tougher period. This summer, there were lots of grass mats. Before sun up, the frog fishing in the mats was insane.

Re: My son's first striper.

I can see it now. I hate to hear that they are not stocking them anymore. The reason I heard they did it in the first place was to control the shad which got out of hand. Most of the people I see trolling for these brutes are using downriggers but his rod doesn't seem to be strong enough for that. I love catching them down here on the Ohio which is only about 20 minutes away for me. Catch a ton of white bass and hybrids too. The reason they are underutilized is when they get that big they aren't that good an eating fish. It is better to catch and release them. The DNR also doesn't seem to promote them either. With the new casino up there I wonder if the lake will get more attention then it does now. My brother from Indy and a couple of buds of ours are planning a short trip up there this spring. Sounds like you are close to the lake if you fish it that much. Frog fishins was one of my favorite ways to hook bass. Always was sucker for top water bass fishing. The adrenaline rush is astounding when a nice one hits.

He'll be home after finals this week. I'll tell him but I was a TKE from another university. Maybe we'll see you on the lake this spring/summer.
