Fishing has been pretty fickle this year in Ohio with the very wet spring we had, plus the weather has been hit-and-miss on the weekends. Had today off and took my son (5 yrs. old) with me this morning. Out on the water for about an hour when we noticed ducks and gulls darting around on the far shore. Motored over and we got into a very large school of white bass that had a school of shad penned up in a small cove. My son threw out his line (white jig) and immediately caught one before I could even drop the trolling motor in the water! I had a ball for a while just taking them off the hook for him and as fast as he threw back in he had another. The whole thing lasted about an hour. I lost track of how many we caught but kept about a dozen 10-12 inchers that will soon be in the frying pan tonight for dinner.

He can't wait to go out next time. Days like this are what you remember on the days when you can't buy a bite. :D

Had a day like that on Grapevine Lake about 30 years ago, Boater.

My son was 8 at the time. We must have boated 100. They are often called "sandies" here in Texas.

One day like that makes a lifelong fisherman, I can tell you from experience.

Your great memories will last at least as long as mine have. :)

Glad you had a nice day with your son.

I think we've all had days like that. It's nice that your son didn't have to wait until he was your age to experience it.

Even happier that you didn't keep them all and only kept what you planned to eat.

Those bass are a lot more fun in the lake than they are in your stomach.

Good for you.

Frednick1

Sounds like they were in "jumps" (least thats what we call it here). You might want to google "white bass jumps" and get some info. If you found a spot where they are in jumps you can usually return there in the evening right at sunset and in the morning about sunrise and catch them like that almost ever day this time of the year. I have a spot in a nearby lake that I go to for white bass jumps every now and then and it is non stop action for about an hour every night. My kids (and I) LOVE the fun! Once in a while they wil be in jumps in the middle of the day, but usually it is at sunrise and just after sunset. They'll hit almost anything white or shiny. I like a 3/8 or 1/2 oz. Kast-Master or a white/chartruese Pop-Eye.
