Well, I finally found the perfect kicker for my boat. It is a 1990 Evinrude 4hp.

I got a good deal on it, so I think, as it was an ex racing sailboat kicker used only to move in and out of the harbour. Was told it had maybe 30 hours on it when it was finally stored for 2 years.

I gave it a quick tune up, fresh gas and cleared out the cobwebs and it fired right up.

This little motor is great! Has a built on fuel tank, 3/4 gallon, that wraps around the front of the engine midsection. I thought this was great as I can swap out the fuel lines between my kicker and main power now.

The kicker is light enough at 38lbs including tank that I don't notice the weight of it hanging off the back while cruising. I had tried out a merc 9.9 but it was just too heavy and cumbersome for this setup.

Couple of items to note, it's only got fwd and neutral, there is no tell tale and the throttle is a slider on the top of the cowling instead of on the tiller arm.

Here's the little guy next to his big brother: Note the black fuel tank attached to the leg.

I am able to steer using the main motor as a rudder. The 4hp puts out a decent amount of thrust, I was wondering if 4 would be enough and it didn't let me down.

Of course nothing compared to his big bro:

Anybody else had or seen one of these motors before?

Cheers~!

I grew up beating the heck out of this one on a little tinny http://s176.photobucket.com/albums/w200/ezmobee/?action=view&current=Evinrude.flv Bulletproof little motor. I sold it a couple years ago on CL. I now have an '89 4HP Deluxe which is also a very nice motor.

Hey ez, that little motor sounds great. How did you like using the slider throttle on a little tinny? I've only ever had the twist grip throttle for small outboards. I'm thinking about getting a small inflatable tender to use this motor with.

I actually liked it better than the twist grip on my Deluxe but that's mainly cuz the twist grip I have is spring loaded and returns to slow speed if you take your hand off it.

Hey Trendsetter

Looks like you boat around Richmond?

Have you tried any fishing yet this year? There's a few feeder Springs and Halibut being caught around here but I haven't luck myself yet.

It's good to hear you found a kicker that works for you, I find it's nice to have a little insurance to get to safety should one lose the big motor.

We have a 1986 4 stroke Yamaha 9.9 high thrust that works well for us. We have a remote control at the helm for it and we use an arm to attach it to the big motor for steering. It also has it's own fuel supply and battery for more redundancy. We can do about 5 knots with it.

Recently a friend gave us another 9.9 for parts so hopefully we can keep running for years to come.

Hey Mike,

Yep, that pic is in the fraser river leaving richmond.

Only had one day salmon fishing this year and didn't catch a thing. I hoping to get out again this week and try for a few of those feeder springs:)

I was thinking about getting the ez-steer arm for my kicker but I found it was pretty good just using the main motor as a rudder. If I find it's not working out in heavier seas I will look into that again.

Having a parts motor is the best way to go; cheap replacement parts.
