My lights are dead...what happened??

This happened in september, but I'm finally getting around to fixing it. It was about 6:00 at night, and I had to meet my friend with the boat in an hour. When I went to hook it up, the plug for the lights came off in my hand. It was too rusty to fix, and I didn't have time to buy another. I did have a plug that fit on my friends truck, so I installed that, and I decided to go with no trailer lights. When I met my friend, we hooked the boat up to his truck and it blew a fuse. Thought it must have been wired wrong, rewired the plug and tried again. Burned another fuse. So...we had to go again with no trailer lights. (we were stuck in a parking lot at least an hour from either of our houses)

WhenI finally got it home, I cut the wires to both taillights right before the light and hooked them up to a 12v battery. Neither worked. Obviously I'm going to have to rewire the whole thing, but I would like to avoid doing whatever I did in the future. The lights worked fine the last time we took the boat out a week before. What the heck happened??!

Most likely a wire has gone to ground somewhere Oz...If the harnes is old, the insulation is probably getting brittle and falling off in places. Best thing to do is replace the whole harness. The kit is cheap enough and gives you all you need to do the job. If you want to spend the 35 to 40 bucks, you can get a kit that has the lights also.

Probably a hot short in the rail. Replace the whole nine yards and you will be good to go for another 10 years, per OBJ....
