My kill switch doesn't kill

I discovered the other day by accident that my kill switch does not work. 97 Stratos with 97 115Johnson. The lanyard had disconnected from the ignition key but the motor still ran. Where do I start in trouble shooting this problem?

The ignition is the type that has the kill switch "indenting the switch so that if the lanyard is pulled, the "switch" pops out. I hope that made some sense.

Well first we need to determine if the switch is bad, or if this is a wiring issue.

You will need to gain access to the rear of the switch. And using a cheap multi meter with a OHMS or continuity setting, determine if the switch is opening with the lanyard pulled.

If it is, then we have a wiring issue. At that point we need to ensure all wires are attached where they should go.

Look for broken off wires, or wires with plugs on the end that are just hanging there.

The fact that you posted this is promising that you will get it fixed. Good advice from Splat. Everybody NEEDS to wear their lanyard. You never know. We've had some real problems this summer at our local lake. A few weeks ago, a couple guys (one was actually a past student of mine) were killed when thrown from their boat and then run over. I guess they took a turn too fast and that was it. Kill switch would have saved both of them, as they were conscious and swimming.

Re: My kill switch doesn't kill

I attempt to keep and maintain all things working on my boat and trailer.

Yes, I am very aware of how important a kill switch is. I 100% attach the lanyard to myself while operating my boat. I was completely shocked to find out that it didn't work and will now pursue a remedy to fix it.
Guess I'll start by opening the dash panel (key is in the dash, not by the shifter and looking in there.

After that, I'll be back asking questions.;)

Thanks for the replies.
