My husband and his four friends went out in a jon boat on the mississippi river near the chain of rocks bridge and were stuck on the rocks due to engine failure..im not sure of the link, but its under mississippi river rescue, if you google it. They are all safe thank god, but the firefighters wouldnt help bring the boat back to shore, so it sat on the rocks overnight. This was on friday 11-11-11 and 2 days later its still there. Does anyone know a place or person who can help us retrieve our boat? We live in st louis mo. Any clue in the right direction would be of great help!!

Thanks!!

I was in that area this past week-Saw that from the hiway. I would think an add in Craig's List boat listings to retrieve the boat with reward would be a way to contact someone with the proper type of boat ( Air Boat or Jet Boat)to go get it.

I think if you call a marina or river salvage company, they could steer you in the right direction

I wouldn't think a jon boat would be to difficult to move. What size is it? So, is it high and dry? How far onto the rocks? Any pics?

I just watched the video! Wow, glad everyone was safe. Is the boat flooded? They were so close the that channel. That's why I have oars on the rivers, just in case. If the boat isn't flooded, you should be able to get close enough for someone to attach a rope and try to tow it off (if not flooded). Short of friends to help, try local marinas for local recommendations. Then,... buy boaters insurance with towing.

That's very helpful. There are many john boats that can handle a load that size. Brians wife, check your PMs. Also, you might check with your local Coast Guard Auxiliary.

Wow. Glad everyone's okay.

Is that a clear path that normally gets run right up to the rocks, or was that a drift from a significant distance away?

no anchor, no paddles, (or an inability to use them) no life jackets, small boat clearly overloaded (looked at pics of incident on net) with 5 men in a boat that would be crowded with 3 on the Mississippi river (deadly when not respected)

according to the news article the boat was damaged and taking on water.... A commercial recovery will likely cost more than the boat is worth and honestly the boat is the least of your concerns..... There are 5 men who are very lucky to be alive and the boat is a very small price to pay for some REALLY poor judgement and lack of respect for a deadly activity.... I actually considered offering to drive out and recover the boat for only expenses until I looked at the news footage. I was really disgusted by what I saw.

I don't think we need to call names but telling it like it is may save a life in the future and as such may be far more helpful than telling a guy how to recover his busted up boat.

Proper protocol, and general boating/safety comments aside, do those rocks go all the way to shore?

I think I would have hoofed it...

A man who owns and outdoor adventure company said he will try to help the owner of the boat remove it from the river on Saturday.

It looks like the guy is going to get some help recovering his boat... that's good.

To the OPs husband, always launch down stream and motor upstream to where you want to fish on a river with current like that. That way if something happens to your motor you can just drift back down stream to where you put in.

I know! I was about to bash one of the inappropriate comments and defend the original poster, and then you step in and delete it under me... Take away all the fun... ;)

Seriously though, I'd have to imagine someone would respond to a craigslist ad... Helping your neighbor out isn't completely dead, in the last 2 years I've pulled about 8 or so boats/pontoons off sandbars, and a couple longer tows for dead engines.

Karma paid me back when my pwc died recently. Another PWC stopped by to see if I needed help. There were maybe a dozen fisherman that had gone by that I had tried to wave down. Needless to say, I probably will NEVER assist another fisherman again, unless they are in danger of bodily harm by their situation. (and no, just because I was on a jetski doesn't mean i was harrassing fishermen. I always give them a wide birth if possible when they are anchored, as I occasionally like to drown minnows myself.)

Is there a link to this story that I missed? Where is the info coming from that was not posted by the OP?

another really easy thing to do , is hang out at the ramp with a case of beer and a hundred bux....whan you see a tinny with a jet putting in. walk up and ask the owner for a hand.

i dont think that retrieval would be too difficult.

ma'am, first step is your insurance company. It's what you pay them for. Many policies have towing coverage for break-down, and surely they'd rather get the boat back than pay a loss claim.

Hope it's still there w/ motor. In an urban setting, that's a concern. Pirates lurk....

If you don't have insurance, I would be adding an appropriate, but non-positive, comment to go along with the safety comments.

(I think we're dealing with a sea gull here)
