HI, everybody !

So Tuesday , 25 june 2013 , was my first time driving a powerboat, on the Long Island Sound !
3 hours on a Sailfish 2180 rented at Port Washington from Long Island Boat Rentals.

It was fun to be there with my girl (6) who slept more than an hour on it!

Now, i want to explain how i got there , boating.

i live in Long Island City, and has been ten years that i see boats on the East river and Hudson,
and i always asked myself , how to do that. But there a bridge between thinking and doing.
Last month i went to the World's fair marina and ask the NYC Parks peoples how to boat on the east river.

The answer was : have a boat .

being in NYC, i thought , you would need a license, pass an exam etc? but no !
they suggest me to contact a USPS ( power squadron) and pass the uscg safety boating license.

Not finding a course close to me , the idea was on hold.

2 weeks after, i was in Port Washington, and found the Windcheck magazine, and there was
a uscg safety boating and safe powerboating handling course at SUNY maritime college in Throggs Neck the 15&16 june, just for Father's day.
Went there and got both exams , YES !!!!!

now i will go back on Thursday , with both kids, and i already where to rent in CAPE COD.

Pascal,
a new addict.

on the finance side :
courses : $350
rental : $280 + gas $64

portable VHF : $145
charts : NY Harbor , LI sound = $45

Re: My first time !

Welcome to iBoats . . .

I don't recall seeing anything in the news media about a boating mishap regarding a Sailfish 2180, so things must have gone OK. :D

You could look at the various web sites for boat listings, if you plan on buying a boat.

iBoats.com
Boattrader.com
boats.com
powerboatlistings.com
oodle.com
Craigslist.org

You can use nadaguides.com and BUCvalue.com as price references. I would figure out what style of boat you are most interested in and then start to look on the web for boats in that range, and maybe a little above. Boats tend to be over priced and only a fraction of boats listed for sale actually sell within a reasonable time frame for that reason.

You mentioned Cape Cod . . . what part/body of water are you planning on?

Just a thought cuz I'm a dyed in the wool Trailer Boater.
If you keep it in a slip: You'll have to pay monthly slip rental, Haul it out periodically to clean the bottom etc., travel to the Marina if there's just a small job you want to take care of, schedule a time to haul it out & prep it for the winter (or move to California). Anything you want to do you've first gotta go to the Marina.
If it's on a Trailer you can: Keep it next to the garage at home or, at a Local rental yard, that's still a lot less expensive than a slip, work on it at your convenience (puttering on the boat is always a good excuse to have a beer). Most important for me, you can take it to that other lake or boating area that you can't get to if it's in the water.
The price of a trailer will be paid by saving the monthly slip rental.
No matter what else you do GET THE BOAT. I'm 76 & still go boating with my Kids & Grand Kids. My Son & Daughter still remind me of all the fun thing we did as they were growing up. That's Priceless!
Enjoy,
John

Hey Man, I live in Brooklyn NY and the Hudson is the most disgusting thing I ever seen in my life unless your talking jersey side. I was looking at slip prices in Brooklyn (Jamaica bay area) it runs about 3k all year including winterizing and summarizing. The problem is if you buy a decent boat for around 5k imagine buying a new boat every two years (slip price x 2 = 6k per 2 years. if You have a big enough drive way u would still pay about hundred dollars every time you want to drop it in the water. I am buying a 12ft inflatable with a nice engine I can cruise and fish for hours then deflate and throw in my suv.

$100 to Launch??
I suppose, if you pay someone else to do it. I usually put my boat in the ocean, launch ramps here in the Greater Los Angeles area are about $10 to $20, in & out, plus parking if you leave your rig in their lot for more than a day. I've been to a couple of the lakes nearby & they're about the same. We took the boat to Lake Powell for a week & a half, last year. I could be wrong (Old Age Creeping Up) but I don't recall a charge to use the Launch Ramp.
By the way, if you're looking for a Great Boating spot to take the family, consider renting a Houseboat and getting lost for a week on Powell. I've been there 7 or 8 times over the last 30 or 40 years, it's new & exciting every time, and, the water is clean. (But you still shouldn't drink from the lake.)
Have Fun

HI,

the problems are no place to put the boat , my driveway is in front of the garage and small , no car able to trail a boat, camry hybrid 2007..
so pay for a place for the boat, a car/truck/ able to trail, insurrance of car ,etc ... slip seems less expensive...

In the 1970's I pulled my 6,000 lb Boat with a little Chevy Malibu (The secrets a sound motor & trans with a BIG Radiator + a Trans Cooler). But I guess that electric, sewing machine, motor in your hybrid isn't up to it.
The arithmetic doesn't seem right tho, "weimed" says you'll pay $3000/year, every year, to park the boat in a slip. Pretty soon the cost difference between a local storage yard & slip rentals will pay for a nice tow vehicle. Most families, with Kids (At least in California), have 2 cars, so one is the daily driver, the other is the backup & also, at least in your case, the tow vehicle. If the tow vehicle is old, you still need liability & medical coverage but, you probably can self insure for the replacement value. Put a bit of the cost of replacement insurance away each month, if you stay accident free it's found money.
Just some thoughts

Re: My first time !

Truck is cheaper on ins. My f150 is about 50 bucks a month cheaper then my cruze

Also there are free launch ramps generally. The one i launch at is 7 bucks with parking which is right by the launch not a 20 min walk away like the free launch

If your into it its worth it
Just make sure you love it before you buy cause they are expensive to own

Re: My first time !

the zodiac inflatables fold up just as big as a full bag of laundry. Cover up a 5hp - 15hp two stroke in a garbage bag and put on your . back seat. it will cost you 1200 for the boat 1k for a nice engine and launch from free ramps ex: Floyd bennet field, Arthur kill rd staten island and jersey has a bunch. Best part u can also use trolling motors on lakes where gas engines are banned. I store my 15hp engine in my apt (thank god It stopped smelling like gas every time I come home)
