Yesterday was my VERY first time launching my boat. This is my very first boat so I was pretty excited and nervous at the same time. I've read about launching and loading here several times, therefore I know what I'm doing right? Yeah, my wife didn't think so either!!
I needed to do some work on my trailer, so figured I'd launch it in the lake, and dock it while I did the work in the parking lot. It went something like this.
I backed down the ramp, tied off to the boat and told the war dept. (my wife) to get in the boat, I will pull her to the dock.
She says, "why me? it might sink!"
I say, it aint gonna sink (this is the boat I got for free and rebuilt)
So on her orders I get in the boat, and give myself a push off the trailer, out into the lake I go, the wind was blowing so it was pretty choppy. It was when I was watching the ramp getting further away that I realized I still had the rope!!
So, figured may want to start the motor so I can get back to the dock. That didn't work.
I literally drifted for 30 minutes until I hit shore, and when I did there was no boat ramp, no wife, & my 5yr old wasn't to be seen.
So As my wife tells me, they walked through a crap load of brush to find me, more rope & oars in hand as they get around the corner they still couldn't see me as I ended up in a little cove. My 5yo starts crying "I miss daddy" as he tells her how I've washed away to the ocean!! Poor boo boo!
Eventually they get to the shore still across the cove from me, to far to throw me anything. I'm still trying to start the motor when I decide to take the cover off It hits me!
This is a evinrude outboard, it has that little red switch thing, one way for pull start, one way for elect start!!! DUH!!!!
I flip the switch crank her over and we're up and running!!
Insult to injury, I failed to bring my drill to do the job I needed to do anyway. So I just launched and loaded for practice I guess.
I learned many a lesson yesterday, while it was stressful at the time I laugh about it now.
I"ll let ya know how my 2nd attempt goes!!
