Before i give my motor its last rites, I am wondering if you can help. I have a 1971 evinrude 2cylinder 50 hp motor (model 50173S)I was out with the boat and all was well. I ran out of gas so refilled (gas and oli mix), and went on my way again. When i was ready to pull the boat from the water I went to start the boat and nothing...not a gig out of the motor. It was as if the battery had been disconnected. I got the boat home checked the battery its fine, checked the ignition switch...fine, and went ahead and replaced the solenoid had one in the garage...still will not start or turn over. I have a boat thats dead in the water...well in my driveway..any suggestions?

Check for a 20A fuse in the engine harness. You can also jump directly from battery POS to the large terminal on the starter solenoid using a single jumper cable. I bet the engine turns over. If so, you have a wiring problem. Make sure battery connections (both ends) are shiny clean and tight.

Welcome to the forum!

Sounds like your main fuse is blown. Its in a tube like fuse holder on back of motor look down low in cowl.

Should be 20 amp.

Good Luck!

Or you could simply have a bad connection in the starting circuit.

Check the "wont start" post in Engine FAQs.

Good luck. :)

And the obvious of course (happened to me)...is your control handle really in neutral? Jiggle it and good luck.
Frank

on most of those old hydro electric motors there was a start safty switch on the block activated by the throttle lever, it opened the ground path for the starter solinoid. check to insure it closes the circuit when starting. no circuit no cranking.
