Thanks to all of you who helped me with my frozen up motor. I sprayed liquid wrench in both cylinders and let it sit for a couple of days. Then I took off the pull starter and got on the 13/16 nut that holds the fly wheel in place . I had to tap it a little to get it to move some and then I worked it back and forth and gained more ground . I sprayed a little liquid wrench as I made each move. Well now the pistons are'nt froze up any more and the pull starter works nice and smooth. I also had to reset the air gap and lubed all the nesisary moveing parts as per the evinrude original repair manual I bought from the dealer. It seems like someone bought this engine and did'nt do any maintenance to it and when it finally quite running they just set it aside and it sat for years. It literary looks like brand new under the engine covers. The spark plugs were worn about 0.010 each over their original gap setting of 0.040 on each plug. I am now draining the gear case lube oil and will refill when I have a chance to pick up a quart of high vis gear lube. I can only hope the the water pump works alright, if not I'll have to open it up. So far I fell very lucky to see that it apeers that no one has done anything at all to this little motor. I will run it as if I am breaking in a new motor as one of you had suggested and then will allways run it on a 50:1 ratio. I also removed the saddle tank wire support braket since it did'nt have one when I bought it. I would like to get a small 2 or 3 gallon stand alone fule tank instead because the original saddle tank only held about 2/3's of a gallon of fuel. Thanks again for your help and suggestions on my problem. Best of luck to all that have helped me , its meant a lot to me . Dan Metz ,www.uptownwestmont@mindspring.com

Hi evin2.5

Might have to add a fuel pump if you want to use separate tank. Some little guys didn't use them with top mount tanks as they were gravity fed....

Good luck!!
:)

trent

in order to post pictures, you have to have a website to store your files. when you are creating a reply, click on image, and it will prompt you for the web address and picture name. All you are really doing is pointing the viewer to your url.
eg. http://members.shaw.ca/randalp/spark.jpg is a picture which resides on my web space. If I click on image(when creating a reply) and type it in, it appears on page of each persons view. trick is to get web space. Most of the time your access provider gives some free with your subscription. Places like "tripod.com" also supply free space.
Good luck.........
:)

I'd suggest replacing the water pump before you use the motor. If you don't know when it was last serviced, it's false economy to run the old one. Even if it pumps water in the test tank, it could fail at any time on the lake.

Re: My evinrude 1988 2.5 hp

HI : I have been thinking about replaceing the water pump but just for now in the off season I am going to tank test it first to see if any other bugs surface. As far as useing a portable fuel tank ,I check in my Evinrude service repair manual and it says I can as long as the distance below the fuel pump is no greater than 24 inches, which it won't be so I'm ok that way. I ordered 2 new spark plugs but all they carry are the alternate plug and also a quart of gear lube. I realy hope and pray it all works out, and so far so good thanks in part to all of your thoughts and input about my motor. Its been nice talking to people like yourselves that have the same interests as I do and know a lot more than me and are willing to freely share your knowhow with me. Thanks again and have a peaceful holiday ahead for you and your families. Dan Metz, Evinrude 2.5. :D
