i was out on the river doing some boating today, the motor was running great and i let the misses drive so i could verify a problem with my set up, i looked over the transom to see if this plate was on top of the water at wot planed off,1339963828624.jpg it was a couple inches under water and i was told it should be just above the surface and that if not the motor needs raised on the transom. then i left her continue drive as it looked like she was having fun, when she was done she stopped and i took over, but when i went to take off i noticed the power was gone it would hardly plane, it would not get 3000 rpm, she was worried said she was sorry she broke the boat, i told her it would be fine i would figure it out when we get it home:facepalm:. so i get home pull off the cover and noticed this lever with nothing attached then noticed this rod hanging, i popped it back in its socket.1339963669572.jpg1339963679331.jpg1339963661216.jpgi'm thinking this is a timing advance:confused: if so it could have been the issue, did i hook it back up correctly

Chances are that was it. Timing did not advance with throttle increase. How secure is it in there now. If it fell out once I would be worried about it doing this on a regular basis.

Agree with Kenny. As a double check, I'd detach that lever again and move the timer base back and forth. It should move very freely with your fingers. If it seems sticky that could be a problem. The grease that lubes the timer base can dry out with age and make the timer base difficult to move. Once you know the timer base moves freely, you may want to replace that ball and socket with a new one prior to your next trip out.

the timer base seemed to move freely, i moved it back and forth when i noticed the lever, trying to figure out what it was, then i started hunting for linkage and saw it hanging down, the plastic clip is worn i think and let it fall, i will have to order a new one, it ran strong before, then it lost alot of power, i was hopeing it was something simple. the cavitation plate was below the water level, and the shaft throws water to either side so i think i need to raise it to reduce the drag

hope so, i have tomorrow off, so i think i will raise the motor 1 hole and see how that does, im getting 4 to 5000 rpms now depending on the load, i think the motor says 4500 to 5500. like to get it up to speed a little i think.

To be on the safe side:

Divorce your wife.....and find one that won't break your motor like your current one did. ;)
