I have a sail boat with a mercury outboard motor. its a 2001, model #1-f05211yk. when I start it, it spits out gas from 2 small brass fittings on the top of the carb. it will run for about 20 seconds than stall out. the whole time spitting gas. any idea how I can fix this. thank you for any help

I know what it is, but here is a test to prove my theory... pump the bulb while looking at or into the carbs. If fuel is leaking while you're pumping the bulb, then you have a bad needle valve in the carb. This is flooding the motor, which causes it to stall and probably not easily restart. Take the carb apart and clean out the needle and seat so it doesn't stick. Then adjust is per the manual. Blow into the fuel intake on the carb with the carb right side up and also upside down. Right side up you should hear the air going through it. Upside down you should get no air to flow through it. This is a quick check before reassembly that you've corrected the problem and that the needle is seating properly into the seat and sealing off fuel flow once the carb bowl is full. After reinstalling the carb, pump the bulb again. It should get hard and never leak any fuel from the carb while pumping. In rare instances, it is a hole in the carb float allowing it to fill with fuel and not float anymore, but this is not likely.
