I just picked my boat up from the shop today after having a new engine coupler installed. I went straight to the water to test the boat. The boat will not shift into second gear. It simply goes to 5500rpm or higher if you give it more throttle butt will not shift. Any suggestions on what could be the problem and how hard is it to fix. Shifted fine last time out. Thanks in advance

Boats don't have a second gear.

Just Forward, Neutral, and Reverse

And also 5500 rpm is to hi for almost any stock engine, It should be lower in most cases. What engine and year and style boat do you have??? And what size prop do you have on the boat.

You most likely have one of the following problems.
1) Still have a bad coupler.
2) Spun prop from hub.
3) wrong size prop for your application.

maybe what you thought was shifting was cavitation then it took hold.

are you putting your drive all the way down?

Spend the money, and have a dealer look at the boat, test run it with you and show you how it works and what does what, and how it works.
He will also notice if something is wrong and can explain why and what to do about it.

Re: my bravo one will not shift into second?

I just went out and put the drive in gear to see if the prop would spin. I put it in forward and the prop would turn forward freely but would not turn backwards at all. Is this how I check to see if it is a prop hub. Thanks

Re: my bravo one will not shift into second?

Usually you will not be able to tell if a prop hub is slipping by hand. There is a big difference between how much torque you can put on the prop by hand and how much torque it takes to move your boat.

Put a mark on the hub of the prop. Put another mark on the prop nut in line with the mark on the prop. Take the boat out and run it. Then look at the marks when you take it out of the water and see if they are still lined up. If they are not lined up, your prop hub is slipping.

Not trying to be mean but with your post and description you need the help of an marine mechanic. Just listen to what Don said.

Spend the money, and have a dealer look at the boat, test run it with you and show you how it works and what does what, and how it works.
He will also notice if something is wrong and can explain why and what to do about it

Re: my bravo one will not shift into second?

You can't run the bought out of the water without cooling it, you have 30 seconds before you blowup the water pump. The drive has to be down before you start it, or you could damage the drive gear. Get some training on how to use the boat, that is a high horse power boat (330hp).....it will be safer for the rest of us. I don't understand how they can sell boats to people and give them no training???

It sounds like a nice boat, I would hate to trash it. The best advice so far is Dons.
